Softball: NCAA Regional 3-seed San Diego St 10 / 2-seed LSU 5 / FINAL

TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 20/22 LSU (34-21) will jump start the Tempe Regional of the 2022 Division I Softball NCAA Tournament with a duel against the Mountain West Conference Champions, San Diego State (37-14) at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, May 20 at Alberta B. Farrington Stadium.

The first game of the regional will be televised on ESPN2 and Patrick Wright will have the call on the LSU Sports Radio Network.

LSU earned the No. 2 seed in the Tempe Regional and enters the 2022 NCAA Tournament with an overall 81-52 record in the Big Dance, and six Women’s College World Series appearances (2001, 2004, 2012, 2015-2017). The Aztecs are the No. 3 seed, while the overall No. 8 seed Arizona State and No. 4 seed Cal State Fullerton makes up the Tempe Regional. The regional tournament is double elimination with the winner between LSU and San Diego State set to play the winner of Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, May 21.

The Tigers bat .291 on the season behind 423 hits and 63 home runs – the fourth most homers in a single season in the program’s record book. They also rank No. 7 in the country with 92 doubles and No. 5 in the NCAA with 224 walks. In the circle, LSU has a 2.89 ERA and has logged 283 strikeouts and 11 shutouts this season.

The Tigers are led by sophomore Danieca Coffey who is batting .385, has a .464 on-base percentage, 70 hits, and 10 stolen bases. Sophomore Ciara Briggs follows with a .366 average and a team-high 52 runs to go along with 32 RBIs. Junior Georgia Clark (.285) leads the Tigers with 59 RBIs (No. 11 in NCAA) and 16 home runs, and sophomore Taylor Pleasants (.302) leads LSU with 27 extra-base hits, including 12 home runs this season.

Junior Ali Kilponen has an 18-7 record in the circle with a staff-low 2.32 ERA behind 138 strikeouts this season. Senior Shelbi Sunseri (8-7) has a 3.05 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 98.2 innings pitched. Sunseri also performs at the plate with a .266 batting average and 15 home runs this season. Sunseri has a total of 48 career home runs, a mark that ranks No. 3 all-time in program history.

LSU and San Diego State will meet for just the third time ever and for the first time in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers won both previous meetings with the first resulting in a 4-1 decision in 1998 and the second a 6-1 victory in 2015.

The Fighting Tigers are 7-8 all-time against this year’s Tempe Regional field in the NCAA Tournament (6-8 vs. Arizona State, 1-0 vs. Cal State Fullerton) and are 60-28 all-time in the NCAA Regionals.

I was at the Regional we were in at Arizona and we hit a ton of HRs there. I remember on a ball hit going "oh shite" thinking it was just a fly ball and then yelled "oh yeah" as it drifted over the fence...

Beth ain't getting fired but coaching changes should never be made over a single recruit.

Maci is good but she isn't gonna come in and be a savior next year. Some have way too high expectations. She wasn't even one of the better hitters for team USA last summer. She will help our catching situation though.
