For those of us who have never set up our own tailgate, tell us how you do it. What is your set up like? What is your typical game-day schedule? Does all of your party have game tickets, or do some stay behind with the setup? When do you tear it down? How do you haul it? What do you cook? How and when did you come into possession of your spot and are you in the same spot every time? When do you get there? When do you leave? Lay it all out.

We tailgate under a big oak near Memorial Tower.

What is your set up like? I go out Friday at 5:00 and set up tent frames. Don't put covers on tents or they'll get stolen. And if it rains during the night, the tents will collapse. We have about four tents, indoor/outdoor carpet, five or six tables, two generators, two TV's, BBQ pit, and community large ice chest.

What is your typical game-day schedule? Day or night game, we typically get out there around 8:00 AM to start cooking. We tear down 1.5 hours before kick-off because we have a group that likes to get into the stadium early to watch warm-ups and pre-game.

Does all of your party have game tickets, or do some stay behind with the setup? For day games, we usually have someone who stays and cooks. That way we don't have to tear down and can tailgate/watch games after LSU game.

When do you tear it down? See above.

How do you haul it? We went about three years using cars and trucks. It was a hassle. Bought a tailgate trailer from someone who listed here (Lloyd Christmas). It's been a purchase that keeps giving. Hard to operate without it.

What do you cook? This year - burgers/boudin, pastalaya, chicken and sausage gumbo, seafood gumbo

How and when did you come into possession of your spot and are you in the same spot every time? We decided to start tailgating (four couples). A guy went out for the first game about 15 years ago, saw the large shade tree, and "planted our flag". We make sure to tailgate first game every year to reclaim our spot.

When do you get there? When do you leave? See above.

Small tailgate group, usually a core of 4 or 5 with lots of others (quite a few LSU student kids of ours and their friends) coming by, so oftentimes we have a dozen or so there.

We tailgate at a free parking area with shade trees and grass, back up the SUVs to the grass and unload. Bathrooms are close by. We've been in the area pretty much for about 20 years now, and at our preferred spot for about the last 10 of those years.

We have usually two canopies, lots of chairs, one grill, a small cooking prep table and a large food/bar folding table. And of course, a tailgate TV plugged in the back of one of the two SUVs to watch the day games before the usual nighttime LSU game. We have a mi-fi to stream ALL ESPN+ games and an antenna for over the air games (Fox, CBS 2:30 game).

On small-scale non-conference nighttime games, we get there about noon-1:00. For bigger games (Bama) we get at 10 AM, same thing for the 2:30 games. 11:00 games we don't bother to tailgate.

Everyone in our core goup and pretty much everyone that comes by has game tickets. Some leave earlier to see the band come down the hill, etc.; a couple of us tailgate runners have seen that enough and stay longer and break everything down and put it away. No 'stuff' to stay with, really.

Since we have been doing it so long, we can break down and put away all of our stuff in about twenty minutes, and leave for Tiger Stadium about 1/2 hour before kick-off to arrive in our seats before the band hits the field.

Everything is hauled in two SUVs.

The cooking deal is interesting. We have a tradition of tying in the food to the opposition: Auburn gets War Eagle barbecued chicken (and any other flying bird opponent gets chicken as well); Texas A&M gets a smoked Texas brisket; we do bacon-wrapped hot dogs for dog-named teams (bulldogs, huskies, etc), gator sausage for Florida; we grill Bubba Gump Shrimp and Crimson Tide redfish for Bama. We did duck breast for Oregon and frog legs for TCU in Dallas, and many years ago turkey cutlets for Virginia Tech. The catch-all for other teams is burgers-- wildcat burgers, mountaineer burgers, badger burgers, etc. We also throw lots of other stuff on the grill-- sausages, pork loin, some steak we slice up, jalapeno poppers, etc.

We also do a special dessert each game where we try to match the opponent's colors in the dessert. Pies, ice creams, cheese cake, bread puddings, and regular cakes. Bama always gets a red velvet cake with a great saying, this was this year's:

Another example-- Auburn logo blueberry pie:

We set up every home game. We get to campus around 7:45 am - 8:00 am. Essentials you will need is atleast 1 canopy, 2 is better. Bring tables, chairs, ice chests with beer & water. To watch College Gameday and the games we have a TV with a Dish Tailgater (I think it’s like $100/month but you can cancel it during the off season. Speakers are important as well. And cooking stuff if you’ll be doing that.

I have set up in Alex box lot since it was built. The best thing about that lot is that there are real bathrooms available all day as well as after the games. I like to do it “old school” and actually use the tailgate of my truck to set up a tv and whiskey/mixers.

I have intentionally kept it simple, as I drive a few hours to/from the game. Typically have 5 or so folks with me every game.

I have a mini Weber charcoal grill and a Coleman stove for cooking. I run the tv with a deep cycle battery and inverter. A $9 set of rabbit ears can pick up 20 or so HD Chanel’s, but I don’t have satellite/ESPN. I have a tent, but only set it up half of the time in the event of sun or rain.

Folks in my area typically break the tailgate down and go into the game an hour before kickoff.

Been doing it this way for nearly twenty years.

What is your set up like?
I used to have a rather large setup before Covid, 6 tents, a couple TV’s, etc. The whole nine yards, and people would just show up. Would host about 15-25 people a game.
Opting out a year really made me realize how much of a hassle it is to haul everything, setup and take down, meal plan, etc. to do all by myself. So I downsized. I now have a single 10x10 and just one TV with my generator, ice chest, and whatever cooking equipment I’m using that week.
To be honest, now It’s just me, my son, and a couple friends and I couldn’t be happier.

What is your typical game-day schedule?
I leave my house in Kenner about 6am and get to campus around 7:30am. Tailgate until about 90 minutes before kickoff, then pack up and head to the stadium.

Does all of your party have game tickets, or do some stay behind with the setup?
Now we do, but before I downsized, I had an aunt and uncle that used to tailgate with us every week that would just stay at the tailgate and watch on tv while the rest of us went in the stadium.

When do you tear it down?
Before going to the stadium, about 90 minutes before kickoff.

How do you haul it?
In my car. I lay the backseat down and everything fits fine in the trunk.

What do you cook?
Over the years, we have cooked just about everything. Jambalaya, and grilling mostly, but for the biggest game of the season, we usually do seafood. We would fry fish, oysters, and shrimp. A couple times we’ve boiled crabs.

How and when did you come into possession of your spot and are you in the same spot every time?
I’m in the Old Front Nine now, and most of the time we are in the same spot or the general area.
Years ago my spot was in the lot where they built the baseball stadium. Had to move because I doubt they would let me setup tailgate in right field, where our old tailgate spot used to be. Lol

When do you get there?
Early Saturday morning. I have gotten to campus for an Alabama game on Friday and just slept at a friends house, but I’m not doing that again.

When do you leave?
Early Saturday morning.

Most of above but live in Michigan, so keep all our stuff in a storage unit. Fly in on Friday, set up by 6am near Coates Hall on Saturday - hit Louie’s for breakfast and get going after that. Sadly (due to theft), pack up and shut down a couple hours before game. Usually cook and share.
