Deitsel and Saban were very similar in that they could have both owned BR if they hadn't left. I
to Cholly Mac for his dedication for all the years. I hope Les stays for the long haul. I really like him as coach of the Tigers!

Bernie Moore has a pretty good case for being on this list. He had 2 SEC championships and some pretty good teams, including 4 seasons with 9 wins during a time with 11 games maximum (10 games regular season). He coached at LSU for 13 seasons, 2nd only in longevity at LSU to McClendon.

Top 5 LSU coaches all time is more of opinion than any bases in facts.
Here is some on those coaches in LSU history most do not know about.
Biff Jones: great recruiter, great coach, recruited all the players on Berine Moore's first 3 teams and coached most their first 2-3 years in college.
Edgar Wingard: ahead of his time, recruited in a era when only the big northern powers were recruiting hard. Run a fast team and countered larger teams with traps and trick plays.
Dana Bible: coached only 3 games at LSU, because LSU asked Coach McDonald to step down after losing to Sewanee. Dana came to LSU at the end of the 1916 season, after coach Pray filled in for McDonald for 2 games. Bible was credited with coming up with the T formation.
E.T. McDonald well loved, much like Wingard and played in the LSU vs Harvard law all star game for LSU. Recruited Pennsylvania just as Wingard. His 1916 team was a good team, but was not near the talent of the 1908 but did have a good back in Flannagan at Half. Played at Colgate and coached at Jefferson college and was replaced there by Doc Fenton.
I could go into all the early coaches those are the best of the pre 1940 coaches.

How anyone can put Cholly Mac ahead of Miles and Saban is beyond me.

That's why I didn't give any facts.
Always good to hear some of the history of the coaches before our time. Sounds like we had some innovators.

Longevity, loyalty. Plus he was the coach when I was in school and I just have lots of fond memories of those games. We always seemed to win a game we were'nt supposed to. Usually lost one we were supposed to win, though, too.

I agree. Cholly Mac was a good coach, but had a really hard head when it came to utilizing his personnel. He almost missed the boat with Bert Jones, playing him only 1/2 the time. He is loved now a lot more than he was at the time he coached.
