I thought I knew what it meant, but after seeing this thread, I may have under sold it. I just thought it was because of the boot shape of Louisiana, of which we commonly refer to our state as The Boot.
Didn’t really think about the “lacing up for battle” meaning, or the the 90s slang either, which also works.

The students at the games should come dressed in shrimp boots and they should have some shirts made with General Wade wearing them.

It's a British soccer term, what we call cleats they call boots. It's calling on the team to get ready to go fight.

Rugby term as well.
"Boot-up" was a command given by coach or captain for the team to the pitch for training or match.
Example: "Boot up Boykies. We take the pitch in 10 minutes."
It's also used to tell a reserve player going in the match.
Example: "Boot up. You're going in for #7."
This term goes back plenty decades.

Pretty sure the meaning for LSU Basketball comes from "boot-up or shut-up". Meaning ready to fight.

Old slang talk from 90s "boot up or shut up" we used to chant it at football games high school. Stand up and fight or shut up. Now with the whole LA boot logo Wade uses it as a double meaning.

To me, growing up in NO in late 80's early 90's it meant put up you dukes and fight.
Hadn't really heard it much until last couple years from the BB team.

Yah... same here. But if you're an LSU fan and can't comprehend "Boot Up" then be a bearcat fan. So what's a bearcat?
