I had no issue with hiring Kelly, although I wasn't fired up about it either. But giving any coach at any school a ten year contract is stupid. Who would replace him? I like Jon Sumrall at Tulane. That is a well coached team

That's the point... we didn't have to give Kelly 100 million. It wasnt necessary.

A 5 or 6 year deal is reasonable... Extend after year 3 if necessary. This is a "Destination" CFB job. LSU doesn't have to you worry about another college program stealing away it's coach... so giving a coach a 10 year deal is stupid.

Ninja please. Big game Brian hasn’t won anything meaningful his entire career. The blank stare on the sidelines tells the tale.

So far we've got Shane Beamer and Deion freaking Sanders. I'm glad this board isn't in charge of the next hire.

The years of contract don't mean all that much in the grand scheme of things, dollar wise. A shorter contract would just yield a higher buyout.

The problem is with the extensions. As long as Kelly isn't extended after a good season, things are fine.

This is the reality of big time college football.

SEC football coaches salaries in 2024:

1. Kirby Smart, Georgia, $13,282,580
2. Steve Sarkisian, Texas, $10,600,000
3. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama $10,000,000
4. Brian Kelly, LSU $9,975,000
5. Mark Stoops, Kentucky, $9,013,600
6. Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss, $9,000,000
7. Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri, $9,000,000
8. Josh Heupel, Tennessee, $9,000,000
9. Brent Venables, Oklahoma, $8,152,000
10. Billy Napier, Florida, $7,370,000
11. Mike Elko, Texas A&M, $7,000,000
12. Hugh Freeze, Auburn, $6,728,100
13. Sam Pittman, Arkansas, $6,498,000
14.Shane Beamer, South Carolina, $6,401,996
15. Jeff Lebby, Mississippi State, $4,250,000
16. Clark Lea, Vanderbilt, $3,189,744

4. Steve Sarkisian, Texas $55,044,583

11. Billy Napier, Florida $26,704,167
12. Hugh Freeze, Auburn $20,312,500

Therein lies the problem with giving that type of contract to a coach who hasn't earned it from you. Saban earned it, Kirby earned it. You can give those guys that type of contract and feel pretty good that you're not going to want to fire them a few years in and have a stupid buyout you're stuck with.

Kelly hadn't earned it like those guys but that's what it took to pull a decently successful coach out of a money program like Notre Dame.

I think you can sit down and talk to Deion . Deion can market . He made a fortune for Colorado . He understands the game . He certainly knows what type of athlete can compete in the SEC .

Who would pony up the money since we are committed to pay Kelly the full amount.
