Anyone familiar with Alpha Sights?

They are saying they will pay me 380 dollars an hour to do a consulting call with a client about the industry I’m in. I assume they will want as much as I can give on my former employer. I’m worried about the legal implications and think it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth. On the other hand 380 bucks for an hour call seems worth it if it’s relatively pain free.

I’m a consultant in my industry.
Not gimmicky. Super legit.
Pays immediately.
Prob do one “consultation” every two months.
Has led to other opportunities as well (beta tester for new technology).

I don't think I've consulted with them. It's probably legit. You'll have to be screened with a bunch of compliance questions. Sometimes compliance sits on the call. They'll tell you if you're in a gray area. I do it for our industry. $500/hr. They're nice little bumps of money. Set aside 30% as you'll get a 1099 at year end.

I avoid these, but believe they are legitimate.

I just don't want to be bothered and am at the point in my career where I can decline it. I don't need the money.
Pro tip: I have ignored these requests and sometimes they will follow-up with a higher offer.

Alphasights is legit and extremely easy to work with.
ETA their guidelines for discussing current/previous employers is pretty strict, they definitely will not put you in a bad position

Thanks for the feedback, might be worth learning more. I definitely could use the money and it’s good to hear about the compliance protocols because the last thing I need is to be sued by my ex-employer.

I get these pretty frequently and refuse…but they are legit.

I guess I'm greedy. I am on retainer with one group. Do a monthly call and they pay me $1,500 every quarter. The random one-offs for $500/hour are nice for splurge money or an expensive date night.

I’ve done like 5 or so preliminary screening calls with them for different projects but they never hire me

Second time I’ve scheduled a ten minute call with the guy and he hasn’t called. First I gave short notice so I was willing to give another shot but I’m done now. I work in an office and went to my car in anticipation and this is just for a screening. What a shitty rep

Look into Guidepoint and GLG, if you're really interested.

Too much conflict of interests with my current employer for me to discuss with the expert networks.

Set up an LLC to have them pay you or paying directly to self?
TIA

I got an EIN and set myself up as a sole proprietor. This allowed me to set up a solo 401k. I fund this with my steady consulting gig. The one-offs I use for fun money.
