Credit Card Discussion - Venture vs American Airlines Card
Posted on 7/14/24 at 10:30 am

To the Credit Car Bros:
I have had a Venture card for about 10 years now. On my previous flight on American (yes, I fly out of Dallas mostly) they were offering their card with 50,000 miles signing bonus thingy. As my family continues to grow, I see up flying more.
Does it make sense to change out the Venture for the American Airlines card or is the venture still the better card? I use my venture points mostly all for covering air travel.

I keep a delta and American card. Have family of 4, free baggage pays for itself.

We fly American a lot because routing through Dallas is typically our best option. The American card has been a good investment for us. We get a couple of free trips every year. Of course, this means we use our credit card entirely too much. Ha

Why not get the card, hit the bonus and then go back to the card you like more?
In the credit card game you should be changing out your credit card every 3-5 months to max out bonuses.
I've slowed down a lot but I've gotten millions of points doing this. Never pay for a flight, hotel or a resort and I vacation multiple times per year.
If you want someone to hold your hand through the process, check out this guy (friend of mine)

I mainly fly American just because of flight options from my local airport…but they really are the worst. Total incompetence and awful customer service. I can’t bring myself to get their credit card.
I do have the United Explorer card and United is great for international flight options. They also have a partnership KLM/Air France so you can use same points for those carriers. Air France has the best business class experience I’ve ever had.
I don’t think American Airlines has any partners.
Also highly recommend Trevor at MileMethod from link above. We just did a European trip with business class flights completely with points using Trevor. Just booked business class for Belgium this winter using all points too.

I Love Bama - Do you just leave all the accounts open? Or do you open and close?

It depends if there is a yearly fee or not.
If there is no cost to be to keep it open, I will do so. If there is a yearly fee, I will normally set a reminder to close it before the fee is charged again.
My credit score remains over 800 despite doing this probably close to 100 times over the last 20 years.

Cool. I was always afraid of the credit score getting dinged too much.

I keep my venture card, but it’s because I’m not loyal to any airline. If you fly out of ATL or DFW or an airline hub, I’d think it would make sense to have an airline card for status.
That being said, you could get the bonus from the new card then cancel it later. I’ve been tempted to do that in the past, but I just don’t want another card.

Interesting you close some of the cards. I know Trevor recommends not closing but downgrading to a no fee card option.
I’ve got 11 cards now and would probably close some of these if it won’t hurt credit. My favorites are the Amex Platinum for benefits and Chase Sapphire for ability to combine points from other Chase cards if anyone is looking for suggestions.

I love Bama - I've never thought about that before... I guess I can upgrade my AMEX Hilton Honors card, get my 175000 points and then downgrade a year for now?

I am all about churning credit cards for points, but folks should be aware of Chase's 5/24 rule.

Yes, but always close Amex after the charge is on statement on your yearly renewal.
You can call Amex and ask for points before you close the card or downgrade.
Otherwise don’t close it early.
AMEX can take points back if you don’t have another card to transfer them to with AMEX.

I might as well keep the card then for another year if they go ahead and charge me.

Sorry they will refund it after you cancel before the statement closes

Gotcha. I’ll probably go ahead and update my Hilton honors card then

50k miles is pretty meh as far as sign up bonuses go

If you can justify the exec platinum its worth it IMO.
Admirals club make a difference if you travel frequently.
If not, the base one is fine but 4x points on bookings adds up well.
