Noob question. Do any of yall pay fee's for a credit card or do you just cancel before the fee hits? I have the barclay arrival plus card and i'm trying to decide if the 90 dollar annual fee is worth it.

Depends. I pay the fees on: Chase Ink Plus, Chase IHG(2 cards), Chase Hyatt & American Express SPG.

It's also good to get a fee free AMEX card if you aren't paying fees as they use your longest open card as your age of account on all your cards.

I like the Arrival card and not sure if I'll cancel it or not. You can always call and threaten to cancel and see if they will waive AF.

I think I am going to downgrade to just the arrival card that has no annual fee. I think the only difference is no foreign fees and double points on everything instead of just double points for travel and dining.

I use my Arrival on Serve so I usually earn more than the fee without ever really swiping it.

Then use it here and there as needed to earn more for my goals such as if I know I'll stay at a non major brand hotel or for ticket taxes, Uber, etc.

Ya probably. As long as I'm in the door I'm ok. The United legs are pretty standard flights that haven't changed their time of departure for over a year so hopefully that remains.

As long as the changes don't happen for a few months I'll cool down enough to deal with them. My body is still recovering from that marathon phone session.

BTW, US Air screwed me on the 15k offer you got. Said I was eligible and then said I wasn't a few days later. Will probably cancel on principle alone

That sucks. I'm just hoping mine works as designed.

I completely understand. I've spent an unfortunate amount of time on the phone with United reps. What makes it even more frustrating is that how easy and smooth it can be when you get a competent rep on the phone after you've wasted hours.

Oh and I don't know if you saw, but MSY just picked up a non-stop service to PTY(Panama) starting in June on Copa Air? I think 3 or 4 days/wk. 6:55(CST) AM departure 3.5 hour flight. Flights back at 6:33(EST) PM.

17.5k one ways in coach using United miles. Good for a long weekend getaway and to dispose of those "extra" miles you have leftover.

Flights from New Orleans will depart on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 6:55 a.m. and arrive at Copa's Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City at 10:19 a.m.

Return flights depart Panama on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 6:33 p.m. and arrive in New Orleans at 10:02 pm.

I did not know that and that is awesome.

My fiancee went down there in 2012. I want to go and see some stuff, but really want to see Albrook. My dad was stationed there around 1980. Thanks for the heads up, really want to check that out.

Eta: This is also huge for us living here who want to get further into South America and not go through Miami or Houston etc. I imagine. Don't look like they've loaded those flights yet for award booking though.

Yeah I'm pretty excited to have it. Definitely a cool non-stop making it MSY's only international destination. It turns a normal 6 hour minimum trip in to 3.5 hours which makes it reasonable for an extended weekend trip.

I saw they have a Westin that goes for 5k SPG points + $75 cash(rack rates $220 and up) would be nice spot to end a vacation down there.

Exactly. I've looked in to Peru several times, but never pulled the trigger. Might be my excuse to do so now.

You can see the flights on Copa's Lifemiles program already.

Does anyone have experience with what kind of taxes/fees/surcharges one might expect when using Korean Air points to travel with Delta?

That award chart is very, very tempting at face value.

I haven't read any thing about the taxes being like British Airways or anything. I've just read booking them can be a pain in the arse. Involved Fax machines not too long ago

Did a lot of research into this myself. My strategy included American to Lima via MIA from MSY. LAN might have been MIA to LIM. Can't recall.

Then use BA Avios to fly Lima to Cusco on LAN (or TAM, I get them confused).

Stay at Starwood Tambo Del Inka and Cusco.

DO IT!

Haha yeah, it's apparently not far from that still. Phone call to hold ticket, fill out form and then email completed form, then call back to confirm/give credit card/etc. Still, that's a damned sexy award chart...

Ya, I'm glad I didn't go that route for Thailand since I would have freaked out during that 2 month period they went down from the Chase transfer partners.

But ya, apparently availability is also very good because no one is fighting for those seats.

Caught my eye because it's apparently the best way to get to Hawaii right now. Then the business class award seats to Europe really caught my attention.

Ya, those redemptions are crazy good.

2 X BIZ on Korean is 160k
2 X BIZ via United is 230K, 280k on partners, hell 2X Economy is 120k.

Better start thinking about Korean first for sure.

By the way, just checked United plus my Chase cards and got enough already for Panama

Don't know when I'd do it but its nice to know

And for 25k economy/45k business, I don't think I'd need much of an excuse for a Hawaiian getaway once things warm up a bit

Yeah there's some pretty damn good redemptions to Hawaii. I've looked in to all those briefly but not enough to give insight.

Worthy of note since I've been looking in to avois usage is Cabo. 4,500 points to Dallas then 7500 to Cabo. Not bad for a 12k point redemption.

Singapore air biz class from Frankfurt is also a good transfer of chase points to Europe. You just have to set up a positioning flight to JFK if you can get there.

But yeah that new panama route has me thinking my wife's next card will be the United explorer. Don't really need biz seating for a 3.5 hour flight imo.

Just got United Explorer Plus cards via targeted offer for the wife and me. 110000 United miles. I'm really enjoying racking up the bonuses.

Looking for some advice here and it seems like this is the thread to leave it.

I'm getting married next year (June 2016) and am looking to book our honeymoon in Thailand and a second stop near there or Hawaii on the way back. I know there are lots of deals out there in terms of credit cards that will allow me to save some serious coin on flights/hotels.

My current cc situation:
AMEX Blue Cash Preferred
AMEX Delta Sky Miles Gold (pretty much zero miles at this point)

What cards should I be targeting to save myself some money on hotels/flights? I'm looking at the SPG Amex as there are some nice resorts in Phuket that are interesting to me. Between me and the fiancée we can easily get 75k points in the next few months with their current offer of 25k points for signing up and spending x within 6 months. This would allow be to book at least a few nights in one of the upper tier spots.

Are there any other good deals out there better than this for hotels? As for flights, we both already have the Delta AMEX so that is a no go, any other good offers out there right now? I checked a few of the dedicated credit cards sites and they all said that SPG was the way to go.

TIA

This is gonna be fun.

To get this started I just booked my Thailand honeymoon for December of this year. Also, I'm assuming the potential weather issues of June in that area don't bother you? I did spend Monsoon season in India but it is luck of the draw.

Anywho, I started my strategy some time ago, and it would have been much easier if I didn't take 5 other trips with points but here are some cards I targeted. If I put 2 X that means my fiancée and I both applied and got the bonus. United devalued their award chart early in this process but I had already committed. Korean Air/Singapore may be a good alternative and Chase points transfer to their programs so below will work for those as well.

Chase Sapphire Preferred 2 X (40,000 bonus)
Chase Freedom 2 X (I got 10k she got the 20k deal) 5 X spend categories help accrue points as well.
United Card 1 X (I got the 50k bonus targeted but you may find it in branch at Chase bank)
Directv 25,000 United Miles offer (Had bought a house so needed cable anyways)
Chase Ink Plus 1 X (50k) business card
Chase Ink Bold 1 X (60k) business card. You can only get one of these now, but very easy to get even without having an actual business. Work around is you both get your own.

That's 295,000 miles right there plus Points earned on spending. Since you two are partners she can transfer her points to you then you transfer to airline and book for both of you. Warning: once they get to the airline there is no turning back, hence the 1 X United card. Her getting one would have just orphaned the miles/made me have to do two separate bookings and added to the PITA factor but it's doable of course

Starwood SPG 2 X (25k + 25k + 5k for referring my fiancée to the card)
I booked a couple nights in Bangkok and Siem Reap. Also, can transfer points to Japan Airlines to book Bangkok Airways to Siem Reap and Phuket.

Decided to go off major brand for Thai island hotel which leads to:

Barclay's Arrival Plus 2 X (will get you $880 in travel money for whatever you want hotel/airline taxes, etc)

---------------

Other route is to get 2 x US airways 50k miles (do this now as cards will no longer be offered after March)
2 X American 50k
The airlines merge their award accounts in June-ish so these points will group together then
blah blah

I haven't fully abused American/US Air for awards so someone may be able to help there.

Also, hotel cards that offer free nights to ANY property like Chase Hyatt could be very useful to you in Hawaii

You beat me to it.

I'll add more later, but I'd probably jump on the Barclays USAir 50k point card and the citi 50k platinum card today and you've almost got enough for first class roundtrip. I'd fly Cathay Pacific routing through hong Kong. Best value for first class to Asia imo.
