Looking for feedback on FreeTaxUSA. I saw it mentioned a couple times here in some other threads the past few months. Doing my taxes tonight. I live in Texas so only need to worry about Federal. Also, my situation is mostly straightforward in my opinion - W2, investment income, married filing jointly but wife stayed at home with our child in 2024, and mortgage.
I've used TurboTax for years but the price keeps creeping higher and they charge extra just to process 1099 forms from my brokerage. Starting to get annoyed with that.

Turbo tax for years was sick of getting the annual $300 shake down.
Freetaxusa the last two years. Zero problems. Will never go back.

It’s absolutely fine for simple returns, silly to use anything else

I can't speak for self employment situations but it handled multiple state income taxes, and ACA advanced tax credits, for me with zero issues. So it's certainly fine for more than just a basic W2.

I've used FreeTaxUSA for a few years now. Super easy, no issues. Error checking worked for me also.

Used it this year for the first time. It’s not as good at importing by signing into any accounts via their interface like Turbo Tax and I had to enter all my shite because it was my first year, but it was worth the $100 savings.
I’m in Texas as well, paid nothing to file. Turbo tax I could get done in just a few minutes because it had all of my info, took me probably an hour this year

I used it this year for this first time and will use it next year. I had to pay a little to file NC state taxes and i did buy the audit support. Even paying for that was half of what H&R block was using. I was able to import all of my data from H&R Block.

I used it for the second time this year. Painless to use, and so much cheaper that TT. I tell everyone about it.

I used TT for years, until I needed their customer service help. It was totally useless. Beyond useless.
I switched to FreeTaxUSA (3 years now I think) and could not be more pleased. I was able to download my last year of TT returns, upload that into FreeTaxUSA, and off I went.
I have encouraged 4 people to make the change and they all have - with similar results. Very pleased. Will never use TT again.

I've read good things about FreeTaxUSA but I've never used it. As long as I keep getting TurboTax Premier for free through Fidelity, I'll keep using it.

Tax CPA here. So much better than TT IMO. Got all of my family and friends on it. Hopefully they stay consistently good. Would recommend for anyone DIY taxes.

Zero issues. I left Turbo Tax a few years ago bc of cost. I think I paid $18 or so to file state return on FreeTax, and done. It remembers previous year’s info as did TT and stores your returns. Can start return and save to return later. Guides you as TT.

I just used FreeTaxUSA today to do my taxes based on this thread. I was trying to use TurboTax, but like you said, they wanted to charge me $129 or some shite just because I had to file a 1099-div. They couldn't even get my state tax right, for some reason, even after I've been using them for years. Freetax only cost $17 to file state, and $0 for fed.
