Gift Card Consolidation?

Work loves to give away gift cards. $25 here, $50 there. I have a stack of them. Most are Visa brand gift cards, some are AMEX. Most gas stations and restaurants won’t take them unless they have more money on them than the total of the transaction. This leads to a bunch of small dollar cards.

Is there a way to consolidate them into one gift card? Or maybe add them to a “wallet”? Maybe I create an Amazon gift card and apply all of them to that total?

That should work if you use the digital gift card.

There’s probably better ways……but I get a lot of gift cards and wind up in the same boat, 3 dollars here, 7 dollars there.

I go to the Academy website and buy Academy gift cards in the amount of the remaining dollar amount.

Obviously you can only use them at Academy……but that’s not a problem for me. We spend a lot there.

I usually end up finding something I want greater than the value of the gift card. So for example last year I needed some new shoes so I bought a Zappos gift card with the AmEx gift card my work gives out, and used my Zappos gift card. The problem I run in to is if the AmEx gift card is $100, it won't authorize the gift card for $100. So I end up running it for $97 or something like that leaving $3 behind on the gift card. It's not exactly material amounts, but still, I don't get the full $100. A little annoying.

Those gift cards are such a scam. Especially the walmart style visa cards.

I read recently 40% of gift cards are never redeemed and 70% of cards are only partially redeemed.

We receive a bunch of shite through Amazon subscribe & save. So I used to just throw them on my Amazon account and let them slowly dwindle away. Pretty sure you can do similar with Walmart & Target, but never actually used them that way.

How does this make it a scam? If the person chooses not to use them, there is no scam here. The scam is when you have those gifts cards that charge you a monthly fee to have a balance on them.

It is becoming a pain to use a gift card. Don't leave a tip over 20% at a restaurant on one. They will hit the business up a couple months down the road and tell them they are tskong anything over that 20% back. Scammers figured this out and are going to town. They hit me up for about $1k in May

Ive noticed you have to use the exact amount that is on the card for it to work. This is for the Vanilla Visa Gift Card.

Slight update- I tried to buy a $50 Amazon gift card with a $50 AMEX gift card. Amazon is not letting it go through due to a “Payment revision needed.” I guess they don’t like the fact I am bringing the AMEX gift card balance to exactly $0.

The scam relates to the intentional difficulty in redeeming the full balance. I'm speaking primarily about those walmart vanilla visa cards, but others of that type as well. The inability to use the balance on the card (and pay the balance due with other means) is a rule for that card issuer, not the store.

You go to a restaurant with a prepaid gift card. Your bill is $100 and you tip $25. Visa, MC, and such only let you tip over 20% so a few months down the road they do a charge back to the business for the overage

I see what you are referring to. It's an issue with a specific type of card, and does appear to have the traits of a scam. I thought you were referring to the number of people that just simply forget they have gift cards and never use them. People like my wife are terrible at remembering to use her gift card, but she will be the first in line to return something no matter how long she's had it and accept the gift card/store credit.

Pretty sure she still has ~$100 in Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards in her wallet.

You can just load to your amazon balance is easy way from home. Most big stores like Costco, Target, Walmart and a lot of grocery stores will autodrain for whatever the amount on the card is and you can pay the balance.

Trade them in.

There will be a fee, of course, but you would prefer a $400 eBay card to $450 spread across 8-10 different places.
