Hi baroquen,

Would you recommend non business majors to take the optional foundation courses before jumping into the MBA courses? My degree is in Economics, but haven’t been in college in 20 years but have been in banking ever since.

Thanks!

Hi Gmoneypdx,

You'll be fine without taking the foundation courses. It had been 26 years since I'd earned my B.S. in Business Admin when I started this LSUS MBA program. However, I've been active in business like you have been and had minimal issues getting back up to speed.

Past students without a previous business degree or experience have posted that they did go ahead and take the foundation courses and wished they had saved the money, as they realized in hindsight that they weren't necessary.

Ok. I’m kinda freaking out. Just scheduled my 3rd test on proctor U. Turns out I will be in Cabo.

Is there anyway to find out if proctor u will work on the Hotel WiFi?

Does anyone know if proctor U will work over VPN?

Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any suggestions on doing well on Kungu's MADM 701 tests? I am having a very, very hard time reading 60+ pages a week and taking a 30 question test that covers everything. He doesn't appear to do any teaching whatsoever, so I'm having a hard time retaining all of this information and doing well on the tests.

Any input is appreciated!

Just speaking from my experience. You're fine with no previous experience but will have to work a little harder catching up than someone who has taken recent courses in statistics, finance, accounting etc. No big deal. As far as the concentrations you're considering; we all have to take the 7 core courses anyway so just take them and feel out Finance, DA, and do a PM elective and go from there. The difference between specialization and concentration is tricky because it depends on the school. LSUS requires a concentration to be three additional courses based on the subject where a specialization only requires two plus any elective. It won't make a ton of difference on a resume unless you're shooting for a job specifically in that field; i.e. a financial analyst resume would look great with MBA with a concentration (or specialization) in Finance but a Project Manager Job would look fine if it just says M.B.A. Just my opinion.

It’s post like this that make me nervous :/ accounting and statistics were tonight subjects for me in under grad. I had to use a tutor for accounting.

I'll let someone else chime in on Stats -- but for Accounting, if you take the course with the right professor,(Ambrosio), the tests are open notes and he has great video lectures that highlight exactly what to look for on the tests. He provides a practice exam that thoroughly covers the weekly exam, and if you attend or rewatch his Zoom sessions, he will give further hints on what exactly to focus on. Don't sweat accounting, at all.

Hi,

Would someone please send me syllabus for Vines FIN 701? I’m trying to determine if this would be the best class to start the program with as I have minimal finance knowledge.

Thank you!

Hey Tank!

I switched classes around to get into Kungu's MADM701 this semester based on the recent feedback about the quality of his class. I have the same complaints, reading is long-winded and difficult to memorize. I got dinged on last weeks discussion post for an (admittedly...) questionable source of a quote but used four other scholarly sources for the real meat of the post, so whatever. My chief complaint of this course is that there are no zoom sessions, no video lectures, and no real supplemental materials. Just a textbook that is drier than a Popeyes biscuit.

I did do better on this weeks assessment by taking more care to eliminate wrong answers and then choosing the best remaining option. Good luck buddy.

In your opinion, is it advisable to pair ISDS 730 with another class? Or should I take it to manage the workload?

I feel the exact same way, Rybo. Truthfully, I don't know what he's really providing students as the professor of this course. Outside of test, discussion, and assignment questions, there is absolutely no teaching. Assignments are graded by academic coaches and tests are automated. We were handed a textbook and pretty much told to "figure it out". Truly regretting taking it with him, and he has very high reviews which is shocking to me.

I wouldn't sweat it. A user told me when I first started "if you're resourceful enough to find this site, you'll be fine."

BigHoss,

I just went through this with a trip to Disney World. The wifi at hotels are on proxy servers and sometimes they will have spikes in bandwidth which can/will cause an interruption to the connection to Moodle. Once that bandwidth falls below the necessary threshold, it kicks you out of the test and may or may not let you back in. In most cases, it will not.

I did consult with LSUS Tech Support on this and they provided all of the information above. Plus, I have also experienced it personally. They will tell you that it should work with the key word of "should" being there. The issues is not the privacy or security aspect - it's the amount of bandwidth. More specifically, upload speed. Has to be around 25 mbs. My professor was unbending and said that it was on me if it went out.

For my trip, I happened to have friends that lived in Orlando and I was able to go over to their house one night and take the test. I took my laptop and all of my own equipment (Camera, mouse & cables) to make sure I was covered.

Hopefully this helps.

I am thinking about signing up this fall. I have been in the business world for the past 10 years and am nervous about going back to school. I travel a lot for work so I thought I could do a lot of the work while traveling.

Some people are talking about proctored exams... do they require going to a testing center? I'm not sure if my work schedule would allow that or is it like an online proctor? Would I need computer with a webcam?

I plan on taking just 1 class per 7 week course. How feasible is this for someone working 50 hours a week plus traveling 15 hours per week (driving but can listen to lectures).

Any advice would help...

For anyone currently in ISDS 715: I'm looking for some advice. This is my last class in the program, and I've done pretty well so far. In ISDS 715, I'm really struggling with the tests. I think it's the class format. A couple-dozen PPT slides with no lecture, no discussion, no Zoom sessions, etc. It doesn't seem to matter how much time I spend trying to memorize the slides, I'm still missing too many questions. How is everyone else handling this class?

Hi BigHoss, I finished the program last year and took the majority of my exams on the road in hotels due to a business-travel heavy job. I haven't run into problems taking them at hotels, recommend that if available, you buy the upgraded wifi. Best to you!

Hello, Im looking into applying for this program and had a few questions.
What is the difference between a program "concentration" and "specialization"?
I am a bit torn between the 3 program areas: Project Management, Finance, Data Analytics... does anyone have any insight on the classes for these specializations?
Also I was curious how forgiving this program is for students who were not business/econ majors?
thanks

Hi, I finished the program last year with a concentration. It does not show on the diploma but it does in the transcript. Personally, I see it as an extra-effort to show that there was a particular area of the MBA you demonstrated an expertise in. I do know that in the tech world, having data analytics or finance concentration could be some extra brownie points in a FP&A role. For a concentration, you'll need to take all three of your elective classes in that track, for a specialization, take two of the three. It is optional and personal choice. The general track is all fine too.

Regarding the program, I did not have a business major undergrad, but working in corporate America for nearly two decades helped. If you have no business background through work, etc. you may find the quant classes tough. Good luck on your decision! For me, looking back, I'm so glad I did it!

Hey Keith!

You and I have similar time commitments from work. I travel weekly for work and do most of my reading and testing from the road. The way the proctored tests work are pretty simple, the website hosting the test uses a Chrome plugin called Proctorio, which uses AI to try to determine if you are cheating by tracking your eye, hand, and audio patterns. You do need a webcam, and I would not suggest using your laptop camera as some professors require you to periodically spin the webcam to prove the room is empty. Picking up a $30 webcam makes this process significantly easier.

As far as your max capacity for courses, there are a number of professor/courses that are easy to double up on -- especially in a field which you are comfortable. Browse the last 20-30 pages of this forum in your free time and you'll get a great feel. Good luck!
