I turn 62 in a week and need to do this. I can do it online right? If so, how hard is it?

Do you already have the ‘Real ID’ DL? If not, then you likely want to review the requirements and compare against domestic flying with Passport.

Here's where to try it. Have your DL and a credit card. LINK If your address has changed, you need to go to an OMV office.
I have the LA Wallet app with my DL in it. They sent me an email about 90 days before renewal time and let me do it with a few clicks.
If you have to go to an office, I hear that making an appointment is well worth it to avoid waiting around.

Did you get a letter from the state? If you didn't, I am pretty sure you will have to go in person. My husband and I both recently renewed online but we both received letters.

Definitely- I’ve made several trips to the DMV in the last 2 years with my teenager and the TIP, Permit, and license along with renewing my own license, and I bet I’ve spent less time in the past 4 visits than I did in the 1 before appointments. Make sure you have the proper paperwork:
1 primary form of ID, such as a US passport or original birth certificate
2 secondary forms of ID
2 proofs of residency
Social Security card or official verification of your Social Security number (I used a tax return)

I will just add that if you do have to go in person, go to a satellite office. We have a few tag and title places here that can do renewals, etc. on site. It takes less than 30 minutes normally. Last time, I was in and out in 10 minutes.
