What are some side hustle rental items that the big rental equipment companies (United; Sunbelt) don't already have a lock on? Items that can be handled by one man and a pickup. I'll hang up and listen.

The smaller market would be by AAA rent-all or similar companies.

I would think that it it's tough market to get into when most Home Depots, Lowes, and Menards having small and medium sized tool rental services and common large machinery rental company.

I mean you’re not going to find something they struggle to keep. If you’re wanting to buy equipment to rent out, be prepared for people to frick it up. I’d look at sub 60 ft man lifts, sub 30 scissors lifts, pressure washers, 15-30 kW generators, and stuff like that. However, I’m sure you’re looking at a large startup cost.

Big start up cost, you'd have to charge and remit tax, some of it depending on your state could be subject to another excise tax like the Texas TERP.

Sounds like a huge pain in the arse for a side gig

In college I put up inflatables and the guy who owned the business made a killing off of it. I have always thought about opening a little inflatable business but the market seems saturated and it would be a huge headache.

If you don’t know the answer you shouldn’t get into the business.

Renting equipment has very expensive insurance costs for commercial liability.

The real answer is for you to do the work yourself such as stump grinder, bobcat, excavator, etc. A dump trailer and a small machine can be a great side hustle if you want.

Renting equipment is not hands off OP, not trying to be a jerk but you must not have much experience. Most people are renting for 1-2 days at most, large companies that do week or monthly rentals aren’t renting from you. A 1 day rental means you have to meet someone to pick up, possibly deliver, pick back up, etc. Could be 2-3 hours of work a day.
