Lady in front of me at Target says "I'm tax exempt" to the cashier before scanning her groceries. Cashier nods and says ok. What's the deal? I thought everyone had to pay sales tax, or at least show proof if making purchases for a non-profit.

She should have a tax exempt number. I guess she was a reseller of some type.

I would have told the cashier I was tax exempt also. If he refused or asked for my card, I would have gotten his arse fired for not requiring ID of the other lady.

I work for a federal agency and occasionaly buy items FOR work. Even if you have a federal credit card (with a pic of the white house on it), paperwork and forms it is usually a pain in the arse to get someone to believe you. Maybe I should shop at target.
