Has there ever been a better run in the history of college football?
1993:
11-1 record
#3 in the polls
Big 8 Champions
Lost in the national title game
1994:
13-0
#1 in the polls
Big 8 Champions
National Champions
1995:
12-0
#1 in the polls
Big 8 Champions
National Champions
1996
11-2
#6 in the polls
Orange Bowl Champions
1997
13-0
#1 in the Coaches Poll
Big 12 Champions
National Champions
A 60-3 record over 5 years, 4 Big 8/12 championships, and 3 national championships. In 1996 they would have played for the national championship but got upset in the Big 12 title game by Texas.

5 year run? Nothing comes close since the 50s with Oklahoma or 40s with Notre Dame

1987-2000 Florida State. They had 14 straight consecutive top five finishes and were 4-0 against Nebraska over that stretch. I still think they had the best team in college football in 1997 and would have beaten Nebraska if the two teams had played each other that year.

Florida State had a run twice as long with a comparable winning percentage, many more major bowl wins and top five finishes, more conference championships, went nine years without losing at home, etc..... They had a much more impressive run than USC.

Okay...so I guess your answer to the OP is FSU.
I'd also add - Oklahoma...1953-57.

It was longer, but finishing either 1st or 2nd for 5 out 6 years is tough to beat.

The three national titles is what makes that Nebraska run awesome. Lots of other impressive streaks in here, but I guess if you were told you could be a five-year player for any school, any time period, that would be the most logical choice.

97 FSu got smoked by UF, and 97 Nebraska had to cheat to beat Mizzou.

Would you say Michigan "got smoked" by Ohio State in 2006?
1997 Floirda 32 Florida State 29. IIRC Fred Taylor reeled off a long run with less than 2 minutes to go to set up the winning score. What a beating

Michigan is lucky they got a split title, they should have gotten the same Penn State did in 94.

FSU didn't get smoked by UF. They lost by a last minute drive in the Swamp during a time when the Gators were invincible at home. And I remember Washington State getting cheated out of a final play by the clock running out against Michigan despite Leaf clearly spiking the ball with one second left on the clock.

I wouldn't say they got smoked, it was a great game between two bitter rivals. I agree with Bench that the 97 FSU team may have been the best team in the nation that year.

actually its nebraska that was lucky. UM was #1 in both polls heading into the bowl games. I think UM was better than nebraska that year.

Miami (Final ranking)
1986 : #2 11-1 (Lost Fiesta Bowl / MNC Game 14-10)
1987 #1 12-0
1988 #2 11-1 (Lost at eventual MNC Notre Dame 31-30) *
1989 #1 11-1
1990 # 3 10-2
1991 #1 12-0
1992 # 2 11-1 (Lost in Sugar Bowl/MNC)
That's 7 years: 66-6. 3 MNC's, 3 #2's and a #3. The 3 years they finished #2, their only loss was to the team that won the MNC..
* In game at ND, they got a bad call on a fumble at goal line, runner's knee was down, also they went for 2 on last play and missed, no OT in 88.
In the modern era, that 7 year run is best IMO.

NU was #1 earlier in the season, they fell after the Mizzu game, which was a miracle play, not "cheating" as the Michitards said above

I always kinda thought it served the B1G right that Penn State got hosed in 94, since it was the the B1G and Rose Bowl that didn't want to join bowl alliance at the time. Other wise, NU and UM would have played.
Would have been a good game, I think NU would have won, but UM D was legit.
