I really want to like him because I respected the way he played the game, but what a scum bag he is/was.
In all honesty most of our sports "heroes" are pieces of shite. I watched Pete Rose because he was a damn good ballplayer, not for his political views, sex life, or gambling addiction. Put Pete in the HOF. Many in the HOF are POS people. Look at Chipper Jones' personal life.

What was a disgrace was not just him betting on baseball as a manager, but then lying to all of us for years, and not just lying, acting like we were all idiots for not believing him and that he was "wronged", only to come out years later with the truth. I personally think THAT is what is keeping him out. Had he just admitted it up front, owned it, with remorse and humbled, I think he is probably in now.
If he got busted 2 years later he would already have been in Cooperstown.

He’s gotten more mileage out of being the all time hits leader and not being in the HOF than had they let him in from the start

No shoeless Joe, NO PETE ROSE!!

Just watched it. Really well done. As others have said in this thread, he’s still a dumb jock who gambles. No humility.
MLB allowed him to be at the Phillies celebration event, his lawyer explicitly tells him to NOT SAY ANYTHING TO THE MEDIA, what does he do…
I think he’ll get in but after he’s passed on.

Same and agreed. I didn’t realize how much of a slimy cocksucker he is.
Banging 12-14 year old girls (his lawyers said he waited til they were 16) then lying point blank. Having his family friend that looked up to him as a father do drug runs and letting the same guy take the fall for him and go to prison.
Basically was/is a pathological liar and an all around scumbag who just also happened to be good at hitting. As far as hof, I don’t think it matters if he’s in or not.
His whole vibe is like how Jon jones is a giant piece of shite who also is probably the best mma fighter of all time.

If you’re talking about Tommy Gioiosa, the author of that biography that came out earlier this year that I mentioned interviewed him. Gioiosa said he encountered Pete in Vegas sitting at a diner and thoughts of beating the absolute dog s**t out of him or even killing him crossed his mind. But when he saw how pitiful Pete is … he can run his mouth and big talk all he wants to on sports talk shows or to interviewers, his existence is pitiful; he’s completely alone and he sits in a booth on The Strip all day and signs baseballs with whatever people want him to say, whether it’s silly and juvenile or obscene, that’s how he makes a living and then he gambles it all away … he went over to Pete and they embraced and had a good visit.

Does Rose still have a radio show?
I know I heard him hosting a show maybe 4-5 years ago.

People say “let him in, he just bet on his own team”.
How do we know that, because he says so?
He lies until he gets caught, and often even after that.
I’m not convinced he hasn’t bet on any and everything both while playing and managing.

This is how I feel. Of course he should be in, but he’s such an ornery and incredibly unlikeable a-hole, that I don’t have the energy/give a frick to make his case. I’m sure the people that actually may have sway feel the same way.
Agree with both. The thing that has kept Rose out of the HoF has always been Rose. I agree that had he copped to it, did a decent mea culpa and took his lumps, he’d have been in the HoF decades ago. It’s his own hubris that has kept him out.

I feel the writers and culture of the baseball HOF are stupid. They should just put people in off of their contribution and be done with it.

I like how the doc just exposed his blatant lies. He’s so full of shite I don’t think they let him in while he’s alive and they probably make him wait a while after he passes because he’s such a slime ball.

frick him.
He was my favorite player. But he never accepted responsibility, never admitted to what he did, and killed Bart Giamatti

The writers have nothing to do with Pete being left out. They’ve never had a chance to vote for him because the HoF itself has stipulated that no one who’s been banned from baseball can be considered for induction.

Everything else is irrelevant as far as MLB is concerned. Betting on your own team is the cardinal sin.

Considering no one will ever touch his all time hits number I think he deserves it
Ichiro would have annihilated Pete Rose's record if he didn't lose 8 years in Japanese baseball.
Rose is pretty overrated. He, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, and Ozzie Smith are some of the more overrated players ever.

Guess you forgot about the hitting streak.

The one where he didn't pass Joe DiMaggio? Rose was a great compiler, but was not dynamic in any way.
Had Ichiro not spent 9 years in Japanese ball. At a below angle pace for his MLB career, he would have had another 1500 hits, easily. He did it at a much higher BA than Rose, and was a consistent gold glove OF.

Ryan is only overrated by people who argue that he’s the GOAT. He wasn’t, but he’s the most entertaining and unique pitcher ever and a deserving first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Ripken didn’t have that many stupendous seasons but he had a whole bunch of above average seasons and longevity is still valued in baseball.
Smith is only overrated if you dismiss defense as part of the game.
And peak Pete Rose when he was slugging in the mid-.400s to low .500s along with the singles was a hellacious player, but he really didn’t belong on an MLB roster after 1980 or so and people can flame away but him passing Cobb in hits was the result of him hanging on and showing his selfishness. Does anyone REALLY think Pete Rose was a “better hitter” than Ty Cobb?
