ETA: how do we feel about crowd noise like any other sport? That should definitely be allowed.

Barstool is lame. But saw this. LINK
It’s about a 1 minute clip of them discussing it.

Golfers are country club soft
As a supreme athlete at the top of your “sport” you should be able to tune that out and have high level focus if you’re at the top of your “sport”

He's such a fricking petulant man child.

They don't assholes to scream during tennis either. He's just whining b/c he was told he can't do something.

By who?

Yelling in a backswing is a douche thing to do with your buddies, even worse if you do it to a pro in a tournament. This is not a debate.

Any sudden noise in a moment of silence is going to throw off any athlete in any sport.

It's not like golfers can't handle noise on a tee shot- see #16 at the waste management open- it's a human response to be distracted by a sudden noise out of nowhere.

Those fools shouldn’t be allowed to discuss a gentleman’s game like Golf.

Nobody should be yelling in a backswing.

A pitcher has a similar task trying to throw strikes as a golfer does trying to pull off some particular shot.

If fans got to stand around the mound, in an otherwise quiet setting, someone right behind the mound yelling “MASHED POTATOES” would throw them off a good bit. But while pitching, most athletes can’t hear a thing. Everything just blends together into one loud and consistent sound.

Golfers could easily operate in that environment. But as is, yelling in their backswing shouldn’t be allowed.

I like listening to music when we play (I know some will clutch pearls over this) and yes the constant nature of the noise is not distracting (can actually be calming) but a single noise when everything else is silent can be distracting.

Yelling any phrase at any point during the swing, before or after contact, is for Bawcomville level IQ people. Attention seeking, low-intelligence individuals exposing themselves. People are there to watch masters of their craft, not indulge in your failed attempt at launching a stand up comedy career.

I find any attention whores and their activities to be annoying, so yes they should start kicking these people out to send a message.

The Masters allowed it this year for the first time I can recall and that's really disappointing. The Masters used to be the one place people had some decorum.

It’s one thing to yell in a backswing, it’s another to yell once the ball is in the air

Yelling Get In The Hole may not sound great on TV, but it doesn’t affect anything after the ball starts flying

It's more about the maturity scale than the gender scale. Sorry you are unable to comprehend.

What about batters, who are much closer to fans? They absolutely hear individual things said by fans. Wouldn't you argue that hitting a baseball in the majors takes at least as much concentration as pitching?

It's BS that in golf fans need to be quiet during the backswing and it's BS that in tennis fans need to be quiet during a point.

Next people will say that fans need to stop waving crap behind backboards during FTs or behind goalposts during FGs/XPs.

Huh? On most tee shots the gallery is within three or four yards of the players.

It should be allowed but it shouldn't be done, unless it's to Patrick reed

Huh? I was responding to ReauxlTide222's comments about pitchers and thus comparing the crowd's proximity to a batter vs. a pitcher.
