The House v. NCAA settlement is starting to really impact college athletics and I would expect a mass announcement by a large number of colleges announcing they are cutting their athletic departments and/or programs as the July 1, 2025 date approaches.

University of Missouri at St Louis

Cleveland State University Bryn Athyn College

San Francisco State Cal Poly

Sonoma State

Mississippi College

A Historic Change Could Bring New Money to College Athletes—but It’s Already Crushing Some Runners’ Dreams

Talladega College

North Idaho College

They won't shutter the whole program at once, but I expect we'll see schools from conferences like the Sunbelt, CUSA, etc start to wind down their involvement in Track & Field, Cross Country, Volleyball, Soccer, etc.

They'll scratch and claw every penny into football and basketball that they can to try and stay semi-relevant but it's already over

College sports at small and mid-major schools is dead

Yay let’s cheer on the demise of good things!

Why should those non-powerhouse athletic programs exist anyway? Less college athletics is good.

I think cross country will be safe tbh. It’s a pretty cheap sport for universities to maintain if done properly, and it can be used to help balance numbers for title ix. Track I can definitely see going, unfortunately.

You are going to see P5 schools start cutting programs as well to fund football and basketball.

Well, college athletics is getting way far away from what it was initially supposed to be. It’s to the point that it is unsustainable. You got teams winning national titles while losing tons of money (South Carolina women’s basketball).

Lindenwood cut their lacrosse, gymnastics, and track and field programs a two years ago and they’ve been in D1 since 2022.

Conferences or the NCAA will amend those rules when it becomes apparent it will be impossible to sustain.

When's the last women's national champion or men's national champion in any sport not named basketball, football, or LSU baseball that turned a profit? Even before all of this.

Many universities are having to slow down or stop athletic facility expansion to stop the NIL bleeding now. Every day, coaches, ADs, and staff make financial sacrifices that most know nothing about. The reason is obvious, there is no NIL ceiling cap, period. So our hard spending boosters continue to up the ante without conscience. BAMA had the first million-dollar QB and he legitimately had big business behind him. That is chicken feed in only 4 short recruiting cycles for an elite QB and it's coming directly out of the pockets of fans, and boosters who make up some of these shady collectives.

These NIL money-sucking small sports will be on the chopping block soon enough. EITHER, OR, is getting close to "mandatory operating procedure" at all schools.

100 years ago sports were just a scholastic extracurricular activity for students. But that ended decades ago. College sports, specifically football and men's basketball (at the D-1) level have multi-million dollar BUSINESSES for decades. The players now getting to share in that revenue is just a logical part of the business.

Is that going to hurt smaller conference programs (akin to small businesses)? Yep. But we were on that path long before NIL became a thing. NIL has just accelerated the ultimate change.

This could kill Team USA Olympic performance. Most of our T&F and swimming athletes, and a lot of other countries’ athletes as well, are NCAA athletes.

Man. That sucks adults might have to stop playing a child’s game. Sorry, Johnny. Cowboys aren’t scouting you. Time to grow up. I know you didn’t come here to “play school” but you might want to focus on your future.
