The average time in 2022 for an MLB game was 3 hours and 3 minutes. The average time for an NFL game was 3 hours and 12 minutes. Why does MLB think they have to completely change the feel of a 150 year old sport because some nerds say the game takes too long? If umpires did their job to speed the game up naturally by telling guys to get in the box, etc, we wouldn’t need a pitch clock.

Age demographics are skewing older from what I remember, and it's not like the younger generation is exactly known for paying attention.

Are younger demos just watching less sports in general though?

If my football team played almost every day of the week, I’d complain a lot more about an over 3 hour game time.

The average SEC on CBS game is 4 hours and 36 minutes.

Ok, so are games too long or is the season too long? Did you see the end of the Braves/Red Sox game, where the hitter was called out for a time violation in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded and a tie game? Are you prepared for that to happen in the post season or pennant race down the stretch? If you think that’s putting a better product on the field then that’s a shame. You can speed up the game, which probably needs to happen, without a clock. Baseball has been the same game for 150 years. A clock isn’t going to bring in new fans, only alienate existing fans.

I spit three times, grabbed my crotch twice, stepped outside three times, asked for time once and previewed my post three times before submitting.

It’s not necessarily the length of the game but the pace of play. There’s too much dead time in a baseball game. 3 hours isn’t terrible if something is happening such as in a football game. MLB can sometimes have the equivalent of a 30 second to 1 minute timeout after every pitch with guys stepping out and adjusting their shite.

A 2019 survey found that the average age of MLB viewers on TV, and the sense is that also will apply to fans in the stands, was 57. That’s a threat to the game’s future so something has to be done to make it appeal to fans of the future, whether it’s this or something else.

I’d like to see the difference between game time and actual time of play (taking out commercials, time outs, etc.)

A football game is 3 1/2 hours. The actual game including half time is only 120 minutes. I wonder what baseball is.

Actually football is maybe 20-30 minutes of action. 60 minutes is tops with the exception of the last play of the quarter or half. All that time that the play clock runs down is not action. That's at least half the game time.

With commercials only at halftime, all said and done the games are over within 2 hours. It is fricking fantastic if you happen to enjoy soccer.

Because the sport is dry as hell for the average fan buddy.
Can’t grow a sport in today’s landscape with Humans that have an attention span of nats.
Gotta be proactive or certain sports will die sir.

You know how to do that? It's not by making a game shorter. It's by pouring a metric frick ton of money into Little League all around the country. You want young fans back you have to get them playing the game. Travel ball has destroyed local little league baseball and made it far less likely for kids to play b/c of the insane costs and time involved. MLB needs to make it cheap and easy for anyone to play in their local area. They need to spend money on improving baseball infrastructure from t-ball on up now if they want to make money of new fans later.
