Full Name: Babe Ruth [George Herman Ruth, Jr.]
Profession: Baseball Legend
Born: February 6, 1895
Star Sign: Aquarius
Birthplace: Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Died: August 16, 1948 (aged 53)
Cause of Death: Cancer
Why Famous: Nicknamed "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat", Ruth is widely considered the greatest baseball player of all time and one of the most significant American sporting icons. One of the first five people chose to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ruth set numerous records in his lifetime.
Originally a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Ruth achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. In 1927, as part of the Murderer's Row lineup, he scored 60 home runs.
Ruth's larger-than-life persona made him a legendary figure of the 1920s, and his off-field behavior was often controversial. Ruth became ill with cancer in 1946 and died two years later.

Ruth is to baseball as Jordan is to basketball. He was a larger than life sports figure who was a legend in his own time.

ETA: Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you can never go wrong.

If there were a Mt. Rushmore of sports, he would be the first name to come to mind for probably 90% of people.

I love the story of the time Ruth walked a guy, then punched the umpire and had to be taken away by police. Then the next pitcher, Ernie something, threw a perfect game which has to be recorded as a no hitter in the record books because of the Ruth walk.

Ruth was light years better than his peers. Chamberlain, Pele, Jordan, Kobe, Nicklaus, Serena, Federer, Belichick, and Saban are all standing on his shoulders.

So he died on the same day Elvis did? Interesting.

interesting little factoid about Ruth...he only won 1 AL MVP award.
It didn't become an annual award until 1922, and he won it in 1923. But after that, he never won it again, even with the following seasons:
46 HR, .378/.513/.739
47 HR, .372/.516/.737
60 HR, .356/.486/.772
54 HR, .323/.463/.709
46 HR, .345/.430/.697
49 HR, .359/.493/.732
There were others, but you get the point. How do those numbers not win you MVP awards?

I always wonder what would have killed Ruth if cancer hadn't gotten him. Too many hot dogs? Jealous husband?

Will probably be the only player ever that won an ERA title, Batting Average Title and Homerun title.

Ruth, Jordan, Gretzky, Rice
The first 3 are easy. You may think others are better, but those 3 are legendary. Football is tricky. I could see Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Joe Montana, Lawrence Taylor or even Brady but IMO Rice had the greatest career.

That means your mother is the reincarnation of Babe Ruth. You should have spent more time in the batting cages as a kid and you'd be a millionaire.

I just learned Babe Ruth has a daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens, still living at the age of 102.
