One of the fastest corners in F1 taken at 160 mph.

This is what Max sounded like on radio right after the crash. Winded is an understatement.

When I see crashes like this on traditional gravel traps and tire barriers I wonder how much the damage and injury would have been reduced with Blue Line and Tecpro like Paul Ricard has. It does reduce the "penalty" provided by gravel traps which is already an "issue" with tracks that have asphalt runoffs without Blue Line.

I imagine Lewis wishes they had them in Shanghai in 2007 at the pit entrance but that is actually a fine place for a standard trap.

I believe that is asphalt now.

FIA helping him once again.

That gravel did nothing but pelt the spectators today.

Max might be the only guy that could have beaten Hamilton yesterday.

I think it’s safe to say everyone besides Max would have lost

that RB gearbox will definitely need to be switched out. Verstappen is probably going to get a grid penalty next race.

Nope.

Every unscheduled gearbox change will require the driver to drop five places on the grid at that meeting. However, if a driver fails to finish a race due to reasons beyond his or his team's control, he may start the next meeting with a different gearbox without incurring a penalty.

Tecpro like Paul Ricard has.

Watch again. He missed the tecpro by a car length.

For someone who doesn’t follow the sport, why can’t they change their gearbox when they want to?

This is probably a bit oversimplified, but it’s to keep costs low and to stop the teams with the biggest wallets from dominating those with smaller budgets. Ferrari could easily afford to have a brand spanking new engine and gearbox for every race, while a team like Haas definitely could not, so giving them the same number of available replacements keeps the field more competitive.

That was essentially my point Silverstone indeed does have sections of Tecprit but it is limited compared to Ricard which has it at the end of pretty much every conceivable medium to high-speed crash vector.

There is also an argument to be made against Blue Line but the gravel trap did almost nothing to reduce Verstappen's speed. Had Silverstone been updated to Paul Ricard standards (most tracks are not near that) I think the G forces would have been significantly lower.

I assume the BRDC doesn't have the money to update even if they wanted to they have run on a shoestring for as long as I can remember. Then you have the Circuit of Wales which though modern will never have the cache of Silverstone.
