The Big 12 heavyweight wrestling champ is an Air Force second lieutenant who enrolled in Okie State after graduating from the Air Force Academy, earned 500k in NIL and will begin his Air Force career after the NCAA championships.

I don’t see anything about a reported $500k NIL, but good for him. This is the good part of NIL & Transfer Portal.

I didn't click on the link, but your description of it makes it seem like a really cool story all around.

Sorry the NIL was in another article.

Surprised a college wrestler could make $500k but those wrestling schools take it seriously

Oklahoma State has decided to go all in on wrestling (again). They used to be the main powerhouse, then Iowa, now Penn State.
The former Oklahoma State coach, John Smith, a legend in wrestling retired and they made David Taylor the highest paid wrestling coach in the country. Even higher than Penn State's Cael Sanderson.
Taylor is backed by Paycom and that billionaire wants to bring Ok State back to #1. They are already making serious noise on the recruiting front since hiring Taylor.

Both Penn State and Oklahoma State wrestling programs are backed by billionaires. Iowa's wrestling roster was supposedly $2 .million this year.
Who knows how much Gable Steveson made at Minnesota this year.

Does wrestling bring in any money to athletic depts, or is the race to the top simply funded due to rich men’s egos?

At places like Oklahoma State and the powerhouse B1G schools, they're probably doing well. Mizzou has always been decent, but doesn't have the backing or the conference cred (they have to wrestle in the Big 12 since the SEC doesn't have wrestling).
Those powerhouse schools sell out every dual in the basketball arenas. And their tournaments are cash cows.
But they also have "wrestling clubs" for Olympic and post-NCAA wrestling that are loosely associated with the school's NCAA program. It's a weird situation.
Anyway, Title IX destroyed a lot of wrestling programs and it's a shame. Wrestling is a great sport that teaches toughness, strength, commitment and also proper nutrition and weight control.
Of all the sports, I believe it needs to be growing, not contracting.

Idk what their ticket prices are but OSU had over 10k fans in attendance for a match & averaged almost 7,600 for their 7 matches this year

Yep, it's big time. As good of an atmosphere as any college basketball game.
No ball. No teammates. Just you. No excuses.

The NCAA wrestling championships are in a week and a half. Definitely worth tuning in for.
It's a serious grind. 3 straight days of having to make weight and facing tough competition.
If someone doesn't know college wrestling, watch the Messenbrink-Caliendo match from the B1G finals on Sunday. A heck of a battle between two great collegiate wrestlers.

LSU had the best wrestling program in the SEC.
johnnythompsonnum1.blogspot.com
They dropped it when Title IX made schools give more scholarships to girls. Just like they dropped their top 10 Men's gymnastics program.
Kevin Jackson was a three time All American. Would have been a four time AA but they cut the program his senior year.

We’re still a very, very good program and Brian Smith may very well be the best coach Mizzou has ever had in any sport, legendary. It’s been a somewhat down year, even though we’ve been ranked all season. The toll of graduation and a shite ton of injuries, particularly to our stars, hell Keegan O’toole didn’t wrestle his first match of the season until like 10 days ago.
Columbia just hosted state wrestling at MU Arena two weeks ago and all sessions were sold out, high school wrestling is huge here.

It always has been. It was huge in my high school in Missouri back when for sure.

shite he probably won’t even serve a real day in the Air Force, he’ll be an athlete like Bobby lashley and Randy couture were as wrestlers while in the Army

I was offered a trip to go to Dagestan

Were you a wrestlers in the military? I was friends with an Army wrestler, Dale Blubaugh. His dad, Doug Blubaugh won Olympic gold in 1960 by beating an Iranian.
Dale was a badass, but Doug was insane. I remember seeing him walk on his hands as an older man, his upper body was that strong.
