Deion calls out Colorado for waiting too long to honor Bill McCartney

I know roasting Deion is what we do here, but this is pretty legit. “Stop waiting until someone dies to honor them” goes for a lot of programs.

quote:
BOULDER, Colo. — Colorado football coach Deion Sanders delivered a series of remarks Saturday that criticized and questioned why the university waited so long to put up a statue in honor of late Colorado coach Bill McCartney.
The school announced Saturday that it was erecting a bronze statue of McCartney to be unveiled before a home football game this year. But McCartney, the winningest coach in CU history, died in January, prompting Sanders to give a passionate speech about the best way to honor people for their accomplishments in an era of instant gratification.
quote:
Sanders said he would try “not to get in trouble with what I’m about to say.”
Then he launched into it:
“Why we wait?” Sanders said in a news conference after his team’s annual intrasquad spring game at Folsom Field. “Wouldn’t we have wanted him to see? To be involved in it? To feel it? To feel the love, the respect, the appreciation?”
quote:
Sanders said he was “sad” because he wanted McCartney to see that statue.
“He can’t see that,” Sanders said. “The same thing with Rashaan Salaam, right? How long did we wait? … How many years after his death?”
After being told it was less than a year, Sanders asked, "So we gotta die to get recognized?"

I feel like this is to distract attention from the fact that his son had his number retired despite not accomplishing much from both an individual and a team standpoint for a QB, especially compared to C. Stewart.

This is true, but as always with Deion, it’s more about him or his crew than anything else. I’ve got a bill of goods to sell you if you actually think he gives one single frick about McCartney. This is all about buying equity for retiring his sons number

LOL
Deion's angle here is absurdly obvious

He probably wants them to make a statue for him as well.

We all know why he's saying this, that said, he's right.

Yeah. His statue is next. If they think it's justified to retire those numbers, why not have a Prime statue?

By the way, does this really need to be on Coach's Wikipedia Page:
"Just before the 1993 Fiesta Bowl, Coach McCartney confessed to his wife that he had committed adultery 20 years ago."

He only said it because of the Shadeur bs.

I read McCartney's book in high school. Everything going on in his life was a cluster, and that might be one of the less extreme things.

Deion has this board on a constant rollercoaster of emotions

Didn't keep his promise, apparently.

He was one of the founders of the Promise Keepers which was a big deal in the 90s. About never having affairs, waiting until marriage for sexual relations, marriage should only be between a man and a woman, etc.
If he was some regular coach, I doubt they’d include it, but this became part of his brand.
And if I remember correctly, it was one of the reasons he founded the org and used himself as an example of someone who sinned and then repented.

Retired numbers for players who played two minutes ago and probably still have old socks in their locker.
A Statue of a former coach they ignored for 3 Decades....at the same time, right on time for Colorado to continue their blitz to be elite, important, one of the big boys overnight....this all is couched as honoring past greats (or in Sanders' kid jersey retirement, honoring players there for a cup of Coffee) but its really just another Prime/Colorado media blitz....hey, remember us? Don't forget how we turned it around ESPN!

Coming from a guy that defrauded kids at his school, this doesn't really hit like he thinks.

Weird that he says this and yet has his own son's number retired before Kordell Stewart, who was a far better and more impactful player for Colorado.

The standard on having a statue of you should be really high especially in regards to sports. Do any of us really believe that Bill McCartney and Nick Saban deserve to have statues? I get people wanting statues devoted to Buddha and Jesus, but Nick Saban and Bill McCartney?

It’s a crime burrow doesn’t have a statue outside tiger stadium.
