Colorado coach Deion Sanders issued another reminder that he will intervene if his quarterback son Shedeur is drafted by an NFL team he doesn’t like and said there are a “couple of teams that I won’t allow him to play for.”

Sanders said this on the Tamron Hall Show Friday as he promotes the new season of his “Coach Prime” documentary series after it debuted this week.

He did not say which teams he had in mind.

“Have you told him privately who you would like for him to play for?” Hall asked Sanders on the show.

“It’s not like that,” Sanders replied. “It’s not like who I would like for him to play for. It’s a couple of teams that I won’t allow him to play for. So it’s not like that. But this is my profession. I know what’s behind the curtain. We ain’t got to get back there for me to understand what’s behind the curtain and what’s not prominent for my son. I’m not doing it.”

quote:

Sanders made a similar warning about this previously, when he said that Shedeur could pull “an Eli” if he didn’t like the NFL team that drafted his son – a reference to when quarterback Eli Manning refused to play for the San Diego Chargers after being drafted by them in 2004.

quote:

“You have said that if the right team does not pick him, that you will…” Hall said before Sanders finished her sentence.

“Intervene,” Sanders said.

He then stated his reason for it.

"I’m not gonna let my son get down in no foolishness," he said.

Deion Sanders issues warning about 2025 NFL draft: `It's gonna be an Eli'

quote:

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has fired a warning shot about what might go down in the 2025 NFL draft.

His top players might refuse to play for certain NFL teams, sort of like how quarterback Eli Manning refused to play for the San Diego Chargers in 2004. The Chargers selected Manning with the No. 1 pick that year but then soon traded him to the New York Giants. Next year, Sanders’ quarterback son at Colorado, Shedeur, is expected to be a top pick, along with Colorado’s two-way star Travis Hunter.

quote:

“I know where I want them to go,” Sanders said recently on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast.. “So It’s certain cities that ain’t gonna happen… It’s gonna be an Eli.”

Sanders predicted Shedeur or Hunter would be selected No. 1 overall next year, with the other one getting picked no later than fourth overall.

quote:

Sanders, 56, previously said in a separate interview with host Chris Russo on SiriusXM that he didn’t want Shedeur “going nowhere cold.”

“He grew up in Texas,” Sanders said then. “He played in Jackson (Mississippi), played in Colorado. Season’s over before it gets cold in Colorado. I’m just thinking way ahead. I don’t want that for him.”

Fantastic post. I mentioned this in the draft thread. How can people be upset when teams are just following his dad's orders. Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. the ultimate FAFO

This. I don’t get the “outrage”. They came out and told a lot of teams Shedeur straight up wouldn’t play for them and the ones he would play for don’t want him. Seems to me he’s getting what he asked for.

The fact that Travis Hunter somehow made it out of Boulder extremely likeable and mature impresses me even more about him. One of the worst franchises in pro sports in a small market just gave up their future to move up and take him, and he was nothing but smiles and talking about the great fishing in Jax.

I'd bet with about 100% accuracy that the Cleveland Browns were one of those teams. Well Deion, you got your wish. Dillon Gabriel says thanks.

I have thought the same thing. So far it seems like Hunter was able to take the positive from being connected with Sanders and not be affected by the nonsense.

I became a fan of Hunter after he posted the youtube video in 2023 with the CSU player who put the hit on him that lacerated his liver. The guy was getting death threats. Hunter reached out and got together with him and put an end to that.

He seems to be a unicorn in personality as well as athletic ability Easy to root for the kid.

Pops should have consulted a map before making such a dumb statement. He excluded half the league as a destination for his son and they obliged.

Seems like they did this to themselves. Good job Deion/Shadeur.

Yep, and he said his son still listens to him. At some point he’s gotta be his own man. His dad is ruining him.

I have a 19 year old in college. I guide him as much as I can, but he's an adult who is making good decisions (about 95% of the time) because we've raised him to think, act and work toward goals. I can't imagine being as over-protective, and simultaneously as trashy, as Deon is and his son must be feeling the constant pressure to "do as his dad says".

Owners don’t want to deal with the circus around the kid.

I know folks have brought up Eli Manning not wanting to play for the Chargers but the Mannings handled that differently and it was rooted in how Leaf was treated there. It didn’t exclude half the NFL.

Deion did that on steroids, not even being willing to acknowledge anyone outside of the Top 5 picks.

And at the time that was, to my knowledge, unprecedented. Did they hint that they would do that beforehand? Deion has been screaming it from the mountain tops for months.

At the end of the day they screwed this job interview up. If you were going to write a book on how to screw up a job interview, this would be it.

It was and while they (Eli and Archie) did comment publicly, they weren’t excluding half the NFL and went through the whole draft process (interviews and so on).
