Why not? The list of NFL RBs who hit 2k is small

The list of CFB RBs who hit 2k is also small

Barry Sanders had a very late start in HS otherwise he'd have done it. That's still incredibly impressive.

Yeah, this is crazy to imagine:

quote:

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Sanders attended Wichita North High, where he did not become the starting tailback until the fourth game of his 1985 senior season. He rushed for 1,417 yards and averaged 10.2 yards per carry in the final seven games of the season, which earned him all-state honors.

Did he just start playing his senior year?

That's why Jaxon had to switch travel teams. The coach's son played SS.

Crazy to even type this. Sanders High School coach said he was too small to be competitive and refused to play him until their starter got hurt in the 4th game and he didn't have another choice.

Talk about a poor evaluator of talent.

Very true, but on that list you'd have to imagine that the vast majority would have gotten 2k yards in college and in high school especially considering how run heavy football was on both of those levels pre 2000s. Definitely would have thought OJ and Dickerson would have done it

Not really. There have been twenty-eight 2,000+ yard rushers in college since 1981.

Has to be one of the worst talent evaluators of all time.

Guy had an all-time great just sitting on the bench.

At least in college, he was behind a Hall of Famer.

If north high was anything like it is now back then it’s slightly less surprising.

Looks like Adrian Peterson came up 75 yards short his freshman season at OU (1925)

So 133 Division 1 teams and 42 years.

That’s roughly 5,500 starting running backs in that span.

28/ 5,500= .005%

Pretty wild for teams scoring 60+ points and getting close to 1,000 yards of offense some games.

Sure, there have been a lot more rushers who didn't make the 2,000 yard mark in college, but the list for the pros is even smaller (6).

First of all only 8 players have rushed for 2000 in the NFL. They also played fewer games in the past

OJ was the first to rush for 2000 in the NFL. His Sr year at USC he ran for 1709 in 10 games, that would be 2563 if he played the 15 games Henry played in 2015.

Eric Dickerson ran for 1617 in 11 games his best year in college that’s 2205 in 15 games.

Adrian Peterson had 1925 in 13 games that’s 2221 in 15

Besides Sanders who was already discussed the other 3 that ran for 2000 Terrell Davis hardly played in college. Jamal Lewis played with Peyton Manning/ was hurt. Chris Johnson went to ECU he didn’t do anything until his last year but he had far fewer carries

Tom Osborn passed in Sanders too because of his size, supposedly he told Sanders after getting torched by him that he made a mistake passing on Sanders.

It is an impressive stat, without question. But you also have to take into account his 2,000 yard season at Alabama was over the course of 15 games.

OJ Simpson had ~1700 yards in 10 games at USC
Eric Dickerson had ~1600 yards in 11 games at SMU

If they played 15 (or even just 13) games in a college season they would be on the list as well. That's not to take anything away from Henry. But that is a big reason he is the only guy on the list.

Considering there have only been 36 instances in the history of major football (FBS and NFL) where a RB rushed for 2,000+ in a season, it isn't all that surprising that only one has done it at all three levels.
