I had a sweet arse Cowboy collar jacked up on top of an old school neck roll.

I still to this day have no idea what the purpose of one is other than to look kewl

believe the idea is you can use your head as a projectile without worrying about your neck snapping backwards could be wrong that’s just what made sense to me when looking at it

I played HS football in 1999. They were so popular our QB rocked one.

I tried to subtly tell him it looked ridiculous, was detrimental to his throwing and was kind of embarrassing for our team but he had to look badass I guess.

Good video on cowboy collars and neck rolls and what happened to them. Basically they didn’t really do much safety wise and people just thought they looked cool.

I’m pretty sure Tim Riggins still wears one.

That’s not a cowboy Collar or a neck roll

It’s a butterfly

Most people wore Cowboy collars incorrectly anyway. They were supposed to go between the shell and liners of pads.

The Dolphin Collar made them obsolete

Cox Collars re Bryan Cox and Butterfly collars also stopped the whiplash effect.

Neck rolls are dangerous if you do not put them or tie them down correctly. The Power XL neck roll was just for looks

Clemson uses a variant of Cowboy Collars with Stalsky (so)

I know all of them

Playing in high school in the late 90s everybody on the OL, DL, LB, even S had one. I had the McDavid cowboy collar with the jersey pulled over until junior year when our coaches let the upperclassmen wear the newer pads with the built in neck roll that was just beastly. The butterfly with the spear that the FSU starting LBs wore in the early 2000s was pretty sweet

In CFB, last time I saw a real neck roll was Penn State linebackers...maybe 10 years ago?

Some still rocking it from the 1980's...

When Penn State linebackers were famous for it.

I wore one back on the 70s just because I liked the way my hair looked rolling out from under the helmet and over the neck roll. Good times.

I liked the neck roll look.

Also miss the big shoulder pads.

Neck rolls were worn to protect your neck. In the 70's coaches were still teaching defenders to put their helmet between the ball carrier's numbers.

I graduated high school in 1977. They started calling 15 yard, spearing, penalties that year. Most refs ignored it, but one called three of them on me in one game.

They didn't allow single digit numbers back then either.

These were in vogue when I was in high school. Our coach wouldn’t let us wear them. Called them a “candy wrapper” lol
