the competition too stiff? I remember guys like Jack Lambert who was a notorious smoker and generally the best condistioned athlete on the field. Many players smoked until the mid 80s and it suddenly stopped.

I read Vince Lombardi's autobiography and they talked about and showed pictures of him and the players smoking in the locker room. I thought that was nuts.

Probably one of the more rapid cultural shifts to ever occur with some thing that was so pervasive not so long ago.

It is Dave Parker so it might not be a cigarette. But many baseball & football players used to do ads for cigarettes

I remember a Payton Hillis interview a couple years ago where he had a huge lipper in.

I think dip is still done frequently with baseball and some football players...I remember Brett Favre always had a dip in on the sidelines. And I don't remember specifically from his playing days, but judging based on when the cameras show him now, Elway dips often too

Didn't Jim Leyland used to chain-smoke in the dugout when the game was close?

Many NFL players dip but it doesn't impact on the field performance or lung capacity like smoking does. I know of many MMA fighters that dip as well and they are in tremendous cardiovascular shape. Is the competition so tight now at the highest level that if one smokes he has no chance to make it in the NFL?

Huge in Italy, but it's probably more taboo in England than it is in the States.
