There are about 26 consensus All-Americans per season. Twenty-four different players have won a Heisman since 2000. The one thing guaranteed about college football is that no one stays too long, and there are always new stars.

Are these all excuses for why it's almost impossible to rank the 25 best college football players of the 2000s? Absolutely. But we're going to do it anyway. It's ranking season, after all.

1. DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska

2. QB Baker Mayfield, Texas Tech/Oklahoma

3. QB Cam Newton, Florida/Auburn

4. QB Vince Young, Texas

5. S Ed Reed, Miami

6. QB Tim Tebow, Florida

7. RB Reggie Bush, USC

8. OT Bryant McKinnie, Miami

9. QB Joe Burrow, Ohio State/LSU

10. WR Larry Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh

Baker at #2 is laughably bad.

I will never fricking understand the Baker hype. He was surrounded by years of Heisman winners better than him and he only made the semi final.

Running backs are almost a dime a dozen and he gets knocked down because of the success of other bama backs (Richardson and Ingram).

Adrian Peterson and Darren McFadden are notable omissions too.

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they made that outlandish list because website traffic is down. Or at least that's what I hope because that's laughable.

Baker Mayfield shouldn’t even be top 10, probably not top 25 either. He was good, but not that great.

This may a bit of my Barner bias, but Baker Mayfield ahead of Cam Newton is crazy.

It's crazy to have him above Tebow and Burrow as well.

Baker Mayfield stands out for the wrong reasons. He couldn’t hold the jock of the other top 10 QBs.

When I saw Baker Mayfield ranked above Reggie Bush I spit out my drink and laughed. Who the hell came up with this ranking?

The list itself wasn’t bad. The order was shite and was inconsistent

Not enough DBs.

Patrick Peterson deserves to be on that list. Best man corner in college football in the last 25 years.

Suh was insane in college but I’m not sure about that #1 spot.

Baker shouldn't be that high, but I think he's getting shite on too much in this thread.

He was Big XII freshman offensive POY as a walk-on at Tech, then he transferred to OU without having a scholarship waiting for him, and finished 4th, 3rd, and 1st in Heisman voting in his three seasons with the Sooners.

The guy overachieved with his talent level more than anyone else on the list. He was a great college player.
