Funnily enough, the last time Washington competed for a national championship...

They played Michigan in the Rose Bowl for all the marbles. The Wolverines were ranked #4 and had the Heisman Trophy winner in Desmond Howard lining up at wide out. Meanwhile, the Huskies were ranked #2 in the nation and hoping to at least split the national championship with #1 Miami. Washington won in such a dominating fashion (34-14) that a split national title is what they got. Miami won the AP national title while Washington was awarded the AFCA Trophy by the Coaches.

Washington was #1 in the Coaches Poll before they won the Rose Bowl.

And the last time Michigan was playing for at least a share of the MNC was against a school from Washington.

Chilling fact: Ted Bundy watched the 1978 Rose Bowl in a Michigan bar. After his Huskies upset Michigan, he started his trip to the Florida State campus where he would brutally attack girls within the Chi O sorority house.

One of the many national championship games that never happened due to bowl ties. I think UW would have beaten Miami that year.

Michigan was also involved in 1984. Washington finished 2nd in both polls after upsetting Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Had Michigan beaten BYU, Washington would have won the national championship.
