I didn't know this story. Any other insomniacs out there, here's something trivial to help you sleep -

wow that ball had some unreal movement

Was never a big fan of Maddux as a player, strongly disliked the Braves and a Mets fan. Respected the hell out of him. That said, since his retirement and having heard some conversations of his, the guy is impressive. His wealth of knowledge and his memory down to detail of things that happened years and years ago is excellent. I've become an admirer.

I know he's a rightty, but he's the definition of "crafty"

I am certain it's a thing with most major league pitchers, but him in particular, it's impressive his knowledge of pitches to certain players in certain games. And his ability to be able to tell where a ball is going to go after he pitches. I mean after it comes off the bat. Many stories and video's he's calling warning track, infield fly, ground ball, foul ball before the ball even reaches it's destination.

Those Braves teams were fun to watch not just because they were good but they were all a bunch of good ol boys.

Shame that I would have had to have been a little older to appreciate them like that… I was a Cubs fan, Harry and Chip and Steve and Slamming Sammy and only watched the Braves when the Cubs weren’t on. I thought the Braves bored me to death

This was a big reason for the "dead ball" era. Back then MLB teams were cheap and they tried to use the same ball for the entire game. In the later innings the ball was so banged up and stained with dirt and tobacco juice that pitchers could move it and hitters couldn't see it because it was brown instead of white. And when they did make contact it was soft as a pillow and died. It wasn't so much about how they made the ball but rather the fact that they used the same few balls every game. The batting splits were extreme. It's also how pitchers could throw complete games every outing without their arm falling off.

I'd bet that has never happened in the history of baseball.
Fans aren't throwing foul balls back.
On average there's more than 1 foul ball going into the stands every single half inning.

Getting older has made me enjoy defensive sports more. Defensive football games. Pitching duels. Etc. I think this is a common thing as people age.
When we’re young we just wanna see dingers! Kids dig the long ball

Before the 1920s they did use 1 ball per game. There weren’t many homers so you don’t have to worry about the fans throwing it back or whatever

Yea, hearing some of the stories about him setting guys up in the regular season with certain pitches to be able to use it against them in the post season was really cool to hear. Not saying it was unique to him, but the detail he had for it seemed pretty rare. A lot of guys will set somebody up for later in the game. Not many set a guy up for 3 months down the road

The Bagwell story backed by the catcher, Eddie Perez. Gave a homer to Bagwell to set that up. That story began my path towards the admiration I now have.

The true GOAT teams are boring as hell. They quietly stick it to you, quietly leave town and leave you to figure out wtf happened???
The 95 Indians were probably the best victims of that.

The way he approached pitching, his analytics was incredible.

Said he honed his skills playing wiffle ball playing wiffle ball in his back yard with his brother Mike (MLB pitcher/coach)

That whole pitching staff loved playing golf together on the road. And the Braves crowds back then during the worst to first year and up to the World Series were wild. It was fun for sure. I totally got swept up in it in my early teens. I think I still have a braves jacket hanging in the closet of my childhood home. On one Florida trip, dad gave us the option of stopping at Wet 'n Wild in Orlando or pushing through and watching the Braves at Wrigley against the Cubs. We chose the baseball game.
These guys were also stars in one of the greatest sports commercials of all time.
