Not counting 177 intentional walks. Overall he issued 999 walks in 5008 career innings pitched. He issued 1.7 walks per 9 innings pitched over his career.
During the 1997 season, he pitched 232 innings and issued 20 walks all season
I stole this off of reddit and dresses it up a bit, Maddux is the goat

It's ridiculous to think that despite having Glavine, Maddux, and Smoltz (three HoF pitchers) in the bullpen, the Braves managed only one World Series title during their run in the 90s. And that's not counting players like Gant, Lopez, Blauser, McGriff, Justice, etc.

It’s actually not ridiculous when you consider how hard it is to win a World Series. And I don’t think you know what bullpen means.

Greg Maddux
Saw an interview with him years and years ago where he said the secret to his success was slowing down when he got behind. Most pitchers when they need a strike get antsy and try and juice up that fastball another 2-3 mph - all that does is flatten the trajectory and elevate it for the batter. Maddux said he would try and take a little bit off when he really needed to nail a pitch.
I mean, it sounds really easy, but it's the mark of his mental toughness to be able to maintain that level of emotional control on the mound.

By far my favorite baseball stat.

From 1996-2000, the Yankees won four world championships with a less talented roster than the Atlanta Braves had over the course of their run in the NL East.

There are generally five or six pitches in the starting rotation. The Braves had 3 Hall of Famers in that rotation, not to mention a solid reliever/closer line-up.
The Braves should have won more than one with all the talent they had.

He also once threw a 76-pitch complete game.

This is still one of the goat pitching stats and one that should be admired more, especially in today's game where soooo many pitchers are routinely injured due to over use.
That's 2.81 pitches per out lol. Absurd.

No doubt, and I think they made the final 5 times. Luckily they got that one or they're the Buffalo Bills of baseball.
Use to love watching those 90's Brave teams, Maddux was money...

Also if I recall correctly, GM velo never touched 90mph. I think 87, maybe 88 was his max.
Where GM really excelled imo was hitting his spots. Location, location, location.

Bobby freaking Cox.

Smoltz wasn’t in the bullpen when the team had Glavine and Maddux

Along with the 177 intentional 3-0 counts I’m sure some of the other 3-0 counts were somewhat intentional.

One of the most incredible stats ever. His pitch count per INNING that day
quote:
1st: 7
2nd: 11
3rd: 9
4th: 11
5th: 7
6th: 7
7th: 7
8th: 9
9th: 8

76 pitches. Yes, just 76. Of those, only 13 were balls. He had six strikeouts. Not only did Maddux not walk anyone, he didn’t get into a single three-ball count all day. He only got two balls against a hitter twice — once in the second inning against Sammy Sosa and in the seventh against Mark Grace.
He also had the quickest complete game. The game started at 7:05pm and ended at 8:50pm. 102 pitches with 13 strikeouts.
