Here would be your major Bowls (pre-BCS/playoffs)

From a simpler time. Not a bad slate of games on New Years.
Rose Bowl
Michigan vs. Washington
(winner is most likely AP national champ)
Fiesta Bowl
Texas vs. Oregon
Sugar Bowl
Alabama vs. Ohio State
Orange Bowl
Florida State vs. Georgia

Geez this is beautiful. Simpler times indeed. Now we have a corporate bowl that is suddenly considered top tier and a goofy playoff that gave a massive recruiting advantage to the teams that made the first one.

That would be all great

I remember thinking in the 90s that all they had to do was play one extra game that is decided AFTER the bowls. Traditioned maintained and failure of the tie-ins avoided.

Those all look like awesome, fun games

Still blows my mind this isn’t what they decided to do. Play regular bowls with tie-ins, then rank and pick best 2 to play one final game

Baseketball really nailed it

Bingo. That’s all that was ever needed. The disputes were always between 2 teams, not 4 or 12.

But how would we know who was the one true champion at the end of the day!
Are we supposed to just sit here all day eating and drinking and watching those games like a bunch of yokels?!

This slate would be way better than what we are gonna get this year. Outside of the playoffs, the bowls are going to be terrible.

The BCS was the perfect metric for judging who should be champion and who should play in the championship.
I really love that we have some lawyers, politicians, and academic types picking our bowls for us. So much more satisfying that teams may not have the ability to play their way in.

Actually, pre-BCS/playoffs would look more like this:
Rose-Michigan vs Washington
Sugar-Bama vs Ohio St
Cotton-Texas vs Georgia
Orange-Florida St vs Oklahoma
Fiesta-Oregon vs Penn St

But think if we could work that system into the playoff system!
QUARTERFINALS
Michigan vs Washington
Texas vs Oregon
Bama vs OSU
FSU vs Georgia
OOOOHHHHWEEEEE that’s some good games

But we couldn’t live with the undefeated FSU being left out and we couldn’t live with a split NC.
Now for some reason we’re worried about teams ranked 10-12 getting a crack at the NC.

It is called conference championships.
Michigan just beat OHio St and they would play a conference championship without divisions.
Washington just beat Oregon.
Alabama just beat Georgia.

Until they constantly let voters circumvent the results.
The perfect system would be to set it up based off conference champions being plugged into a BCS computer formula.

It's so far from this, it almost brings a tear to my eye thinking about how great even the BCS era was.
The playoff really degraded the traditionally great matchups we got in these bowls.
Hell, every one of those matchups just fits the respective bowl. And we'll never have that again.

quote:Nope. It probably missed the true 1 and 2 several times as evidenced by the 5 team playoff and how many times 3 and 4 have won it, and the frequency that 3 or 4 beats 2 and 1.
