The Highland Park Scots soccer team defeated Liberty Hill 2-0 in Georgetown on Friday to claim the 5A Division II state title.
"On Friday night, the University Interscholastic League announced the team would have to forfeit the title.
Highland Park staff discovered the team used an ineligible player in the championship game and reported it to the UIL.
An investigation by Highland Park administration confirmed the player was ineligible.
UIL rules say the minimum penalty for allowing an ineligible player is forfeiture of the contest."
Like how does this happen?

The school ratted themselves out. What idiots. Lost a State Title over it. Sometimes it’s best to keep quiet. Win at all costs!

Maybe grades or something. When I was in HS our football team had to forfeit 5 games because the kicker (not even the FG kicker, he just did kickoffs) was ruled ineligible in the middle of the season. You would think that's something you would know before the season starts but it's surprisingly not that uncommon

Then those schools are just lazy, not paying attention, ignorant, or all of the above.
There’s absolutely 0 reason why this should happen, or “not be uncommon”

That school wins a lot of state titles, and they are good in all sports across the board. Top notch academics as well. Scottie Scheffler (golf), Matthew Stafford (football), and Clayton Kershaw (baseball) are some alumni.
They will be OK.
They will be OK.

The average school administration is not what you expect.

But the “average” school administration shouldn’t be at Highland Park

So does the team that got spanked in the title game become the champ, or is this a vacated title situation?

Am I the only one who doesn’t automatically know where Highland Park or Liberty Hill is?

Highland Park a really rich city inside of Dallas proper. Their HS is one of the best funded public schools in the state and tends to kick a lot of arse at sports. Bobby Layne, Doak Walker, and Matt Stafford played for HP.
Liberty Hill is a tiny arse town north of Austin that's been experiencing a massive population boom the last few years going from 3k in 2020 to 10k in 2023.

Their district opponents say they get all of the calls. I was at a game there and saw a flag get picked up for no reason after some guy on the HP sideline came over and talked to the refs. My friend who's buddy was the West Mesquite coach said the refs got a couple of extra days at someone's hunting camp.
In the past the only thing I ever heard of their football team being penalized for was holding illegal practices. You could drive by there at any point during the year and see a few guys on their field running plays or just throwing passes.

Of course they do

Of course they’ll be ok. Sucks for a kid who worked his arse of to lose out on a huge accomplishment due to some technicality though.

A lot of sports fans particularly those from Louisiana (due to proximity) would know where Highland Park is because of Matthew Stafford and Clayton, Kershaw and Scottie Scheffler.
Also people who have visited Dallas are familiar with the city because it’s like the richest city inside of Dallas. There’s actually two cities inside of Dallas, both Highland Park and University Park and together almost the entirety (except for a small sliver) of those towns or zone for one ISD. There’s very minimal multi family housing so the ISD is basically only rich kids.
For instance, about probably 10 years ago, the state football team won the state title. Jerry Jones grandson was the quarterback for that game and it was played in AT&T stadium. The homes in University Park had shot up over the last few years. Six years ago you could get a small home for like 1.2 million. Now they start in the $2 million plus range.
Now I wouldn’t expect people from the other side of the country or non-sports fans to be familiar with Highland Park. And to be honest, I didn’t know where liberty Hill was myself.

I assumed it was some school off of highland road in Baton Rouge since it’s been 20+ years since I’ve been there regularly

Then I read the OP and didn’t know a Liberty Hill/Georgetown from 5a in my brother Martin days.

I’ve been to multiple wrestling meets where HP participated (home and away) and there wasn’t any obvious preferential treatment by the refs. After one match, the HP wrestler did something unsportsmanlike and the coach kicked him off the team immediately. Supposedly, the kid had to apologize later just to get back on the team as a manager.
They played Beethoven in the gym before matches one time. The parents were always good hosts.

The year that Stars rookie Brenden Morrow took his teammate, Guy Carbonneau's daughter, Anne-Marie, to the Highland Park prom was a crazy one. Pretty sure it was the year then Stars and Rangers owner Tom Hicks' son's senior party was raided by the cops. They all still lived happily, ever after though. Morrow married Guy's daughter and had a nice family.
