How did Hawaii play 13 games in the regular season this year?

The Mountain West Championship against Boise St. was their 14th game of the season. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the NCAA allows CFB teams to play only 12 games in the regular season?

I don't think anyone really cares what Hawaii does.

Hawaii, and teams that play road games at Hawaii, are allowed a 13th game to offset travel costs. Been that way for a good while

Hawaii always plays 13 regular season games.

seems like just yesterday we were gearing up for Arizona at Hawaii week 0. man how time flies.

Due to Hawaii Standard Time - they are pretty far behind, so a lot to make up for.

This gets asked every year I feel like. And I always forget the answer.

When life gives you lemons, just say frick the lemons and play a 13th game

Next you're going to tell me that two service academies play a game after all of the bowl games have been set.

NCAA lets them play an extra game due to them being so far away from the main land to try and recoup some of their money spent on traveling ... Just like any team who plays @Hawaii they get a 13th game

They played a game in week 0 brah. Then they played 4 September games, 3 October games, and 5 November games.
Add them up and that's how they played 13 regular season games.

I used to love watching them... especially when random OOC P5 teams would visit

Has to do with the International Date Line.

Hawaii uses the metric system so their 13 games converts to 12 games for everyone else.

Bama made a few trips out there when they were on probation in the 2000s

2005 USC played @ Hawaii.
Strangest thing I've ever seen. Nobody would do that now, especially not the defending National Champs. They'd just buy out the game and put in San Jose State.
Must've seen it as a vacation, recruiting trip for the Somoans.
Hawaii lost 67-17, the next week Arkansas lost to USC 70-17.
USC beat Arkansas by more points than the combined scores of every SEC team that beat Arkansas that year (6 teams.)
USC beat Arkansas by 53 points.
Vandy, South Carolina, Alabama, #21 Auburn, #4 Georgia and #3 LSU beat Arkansas by a combined 44 points.

In 1996, BYU played 15 games.
Kickoff Classic vs A&M
Game at Hawaii
WAC Championship vs Wyoming
Cotton Bowl vs Kansas State
They were the first team to ever win 14 games in a season.

They’re Hawaii, they can do whatever it takes to play in their own bowl game every single year.

Wrong archipelago. You cross the International Date Line to go to Japan or the Philippines, not Hawaii.

Being able to get those type of teams there made them a little higher prestige than your normal G5
