How should the NFL handle “fake slides” going forward?

Mahomes is know for tiptoeing sidelines then accelerating to avoid hits, and he also has done the below before as well. The defender clearly tries to avoid hitting Mahomes when he starts the fake slide

Identical still shot that is being used to show the start of Lawrence’s slide

When was this video from?

College and pro has changed the rule in the last couple of years then as soon as the move is made by a QB they blow it dead.

Good post, well researched.

I agree with first response - spot the ball where the "fake slide" spotted and maybe add a 5 yard penalty on top of it

Once they simulate an attempt to slide, play over, down at beginning of motion

Thats such a hard call though of was it a fake slide or a juke

Just eliminate the slide. If the QB wants to avoid getting hit they need to get down so early they can declare themselves and the play dead on the ground

If not, don’t run

That's what I was just going to ask. The Mahomes clip looks like he could be decelerating and stutter stepping to get around the guy.

This is from the other thread on this subject on page 1

H-town
quote:

a fake slide is a penalty loss of 10 yards from the spot of the fake,

SFP:

That and make any half-assed/delayed/non-deliberate slide (which TL's was, in all honesty) lose all protection and "defenseless" protections.

Same with sidelines.

The offensive player either has to commit or it doesn't count and it's open season.

Yep. Josh Allen had a similar one in the playoffs last year

I'm sure a rule will come out when someone blasts Mahomes when he looks like he is going to slide next time outlawing anyone from touching him. It's going to take a high profile injury, and Mahomes seems most likely to try a fake slide.

Get rid of them completely. If you want to pretend to be a running back... then run and get tackled. QBs protected enough in the pocket.
