Illegal Block in the Back... On the kicking team

4th quarter... Right came tonight between Carholic and Saint Amant. 4th down deep and St Amant punts it to mid field. Minimal return but a flag on the field. Call was a block in the back on the kicking team. Never, and I have watched a good amount of football, have I seen that. Anyone care to elaborate on how this would be called?

Someone was pushing in the back. It was probably unnecessary and served no purpose.

I saw it called during a play earlier this week during a 7/8th grade game on the defense (LHSAA Refs).. The ref stated that the player pushed the player in the back on his way towards the ball carrier and that was a point of emphasis within the reffing associations.. Player safety issue unless the player is deemed in thje close direct path to the ball carrier.

Interesting. I thought the call was weak at best given the fact that it was with 4 mins left and made a big difference in field position. Critical call at that juncture.

High school level is extremely cautious on penalties if they can be argued unsafe.
We lost a game in HS on an Aiding the runner call
1.) who the frick still has this in the rule book?
2.) DUMBEST RULE EVER
3.) we didn't even aide the frickin runner. The part they were calling was our lineman blocking a defender into the end zone to the left of the ball carrier

I'm an official in Louisiana but I work for MAIS. It is a foul, but one that's every rarely called. If it is, it's normally due to a flagrant type of action which is about the only way I'm going to call it, which if it's unnecessary and flagrant I'm just going to call unnecessary roughness.
As far as the other poster talking about aiding the runner, I agree I don't like the rule. I would literally have to see a teammate push the runner or pull him clearly and in that case I just call their forward progress done instead of flagging it.

I thought that rule had been eliminated? It has at the college and pro level, I am almost certain.
I actually saw that called in a college game when a defender intercepted a pass for USL (in the late 70's, I was still in high school). Ron Irving, a DB for USL intercepted a pass that he apparently ran back for a TD only to have it go back to the spot where a D lineman reached out held him up as he stumbled after grabbing the pick. I actually understood that rule in college where contact with the ground means you're down regardless of contact with an opposing player.
What was always frustrating was that as it was usually applied an O linemen could slam into the pile and push it forward as long as they weren't pushing on the actual runner. That seemed like a nonsensical distinction.
