Is this the craziest trade in NBA history?

According to ESPN, here are the previous biggest trades in NBA history:
2019: Lonzo, Ingram, and Hart for AD
2019: Paul George for SGA and 5 firsts
2004: Shaq for Lamar Odom and Caron Butler
In terms of the level of players and shock value, this has to be #1, right?

Man this somehow feels crazier than all of those

I'd say those don't even come close to touching this. Absurd trade.

Unequivocally
Trading the alpha dog, generational top 3 guy on a Finals team 7 months later for seemingly no reason in the middle of the night without shopping him around
fricking insane

Being reported the Mavs approached the Lakers
There had to have been something else going on. This makes no sense

Pau Gasol to LA for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron Mckie, the draft rights to then fat, unknown Marc Gasol, and two very late first round picks out of nowhere has to be up there
Also led to one of the best SAS rants ever

There were rumblings and even rumors to those trades…this came out of absolutely NOWHERE. We’ve been on Jimmy Butler watch all season, there has not been any inkling of this happening. Might be hyperbole but this might be the most shocking trade in sports

All of those were rumored for awhile- this came out of no where

Dude they went cheap. Luka was about to make like 350/5 and they said “nope”

What if this game goes to OT? We're all waiting for SC like we're 16 again

I remember in 1997 the Nets and Mavericks swapping 9 players.
quote:
On February 17, 1997, the Dallas Mavericks and the New Jersey Nets executed a significant nine-player trade. The Mavericks sent Jim Jackson, Chris Gatling, Sam Cassell, George McCloud, and Eric Montross to the Nets. In return, Dallas acquired center Shawn Bradley, guards Khalid Reeves and Robert Pack, and forward Ed O'Bannon. ([spokesman.com](LINK ))
This trade was part of a broader strategy by the Mavericks to overhaul their roster during the 1996–97 NBA season. Earlier that season, they had traded Jason Kidd to the Phoenix Suns, signaling a commitment to significant changes. The acquisition of Shawn Bradley provided Dallas with a formidable presence in the paint, while Robert Pack and Khalid Reeves added depth to their backcourt. Ed O'Bannon, a former college standout, was expected to bolster the team's forward rotation. ([en.wikipedia.org](LINK ))
For the Nets, this trade brought in versatile players like Jim Jackson and Sam Cassell, who contributed significantly to the team's performance. Chris Gatling, despite playing only three games post-trade due to an ear infection, was also a notable addition. ([en.wikipedia.org](LINK ))
This transaction is considered one of the largest two-team trades in NBA history, involving a total of nine players. ([deseret.com](LINK ))
In summary, the February 1997 trade between the Mavericks and the Nets was a pivotal moment for both franchises, leading to significant roster changes and impacting their respective trajectories in the league.

The nba was already close to its death. This just solidifes it.

How does Anthony Davis not have a no trade clause?

They were not a championship team with fatso as the #1

Maybe there's something from the 70s or 80s that compare. But this is easily the craziest trade in my lifetime.
Luka is a bonifide top 5 player in the prime of his career, just led his team to the NBA finals. He was just randomly traded for a 32 year old who's probably top 20 range.
I feel like this could have been a perfect trade for Dallas if they let go of Kyrie. But this was insane. This is like if the Bills decided to trade Josh Allen. But this may still be worse, because Luka is 3 years younger
