Big 12 Player of the Year JT Toppin is spurning the NBA Draft and returning to Texas Tech for the 2025-26 season, he announced Wednesday. Toppin earned consensus All-American honors as a sophomore star for the Red Raiders and is well-positioned to be college basketball's preseason Player of the Year.

Toppin's return ensures Texas Tech will remain a force on the national level after reaching the Elite Eight as a No. 3 seed in coach Grant McCasland's second season. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 22.3 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks over Texas Tech's final 15 games and rose to No. 15 in the CBS Sports NBA Draft Prospect Rankings.

The Red Raiders rank No. 13 in Gary Parrish's way-too-early Top 25 And 1 for the 2025-26 season. Getting Toppin back is a win not just for Texas Tech but college basketball as a whole. At a moment of unprecedented player compensation in the sport, the Red Raiders kept Toppin from testing the NBA Draft waters or entering the transfer portal.

Was iffy about him being a first rounder, gets to improve his draft stock and make money in the meantime.

I can’t imagine how much money you must have to be able to throw $4 million at a 19-year-old, just so your favorite sports team can lose in the sweet 16

A complete no brainer if you’re Toppin, but 4 million dollars? Texas Tech is throwing around money like nobodies business across all sports from their oil guys.

The return on these investments will never pay off, but I guess if you’re a billionaire die hard Tech alum, this is their only way to try and have real success. No National Titles in the Big 3 College sports, and I suppose this is the only way to try and make that happen. I have my doubts.

2024 1st overall pick will make roughly $13.2 mil for the 2025-26 NBA season.
2024 pick 30 will make roughly $2.6 mil.
2024 pick 60 (last) will make roughly $2 mil.

Do you think there are other ways to make this happen in the NIL era?

Last time Tech made the elite 8 they went to the final the following year, feels like a smart choice by them for a guy who is going to compete for national player of the year

I don’t think there is another way, I’m just saying Tech is desperate and it seems like a stretch. We will have to see.

I think Beard is still better than Mcasland and Tech’s 2019 team was loaded with complimentary players all around. In Hindsight their 2018 team could have played for a National Title too, had they not run into a buzzsaw in Villanova in the Elite 8.

Does $4million (minus taxes) actually hit his bank account?
Or is this “a deal worth $4million”? Where housing/transportation/etc is added up alongside some monetary amount?

Wouldnt be surprising given the money TTU has been throwing around in football and basketball. They reportedly gave David Bailey from Stanford upwards of $2M.

They are al in.
