I was watching the Netflix documentary on The Comeback about the Red Sox and Yankees from 2004. I didn’t realize when they were showing the ALCS game from 2003, how bad Red Sox manager freaked up by not pulling Pedro Martinez when you can see he was breaking down on the mound. They had the game won and were in control. I was a junior in high school watching it not realizing that at the moment and I would have been sick if I was a Red Sox fan. That led to this….

2003 MLB post season was the best with that and with the Yankees losing to the Marlins all thanks to this lol

I had forgotten about it in my distant core memories of that series in that era but watching the doc it brought back up how shocked I was with that move. That was peak MLB fandom for me in those years.

97-03 pedro has the most insane stats

highest ERA (2.89) led the league in era 5 times

highest Whip (1.091) led the league 6 times in whip. Including all time season low at .7373 in 2000

they got sick of giving him the cy-young. Should have gotten another in 2002

Easily the most dominant pitcher I’ve ever seen. Did all that when steroids were running rampant

I actually felt bad for Little. He surely left him in too long. But if he pulls him earlier, and someone else loses the game, that would get second-guessed even more. How do you pull out your top pitcher (and arguably the best in baseball) on the biggest stage and in the biggest moment? He went with his guy, and it backfired.

he led the league in WAR in 2000

above juiced up Arod by 1.3 in his highest WAR year

I'll happily hijack in early 2000s baseball thread to jerk off to pedro stats

Pedro was the Sandy Koufax of our time. Just insanely dominant for about 6 years. Grady fricked him bad in that game. Could not believe what I was seei g as a Yankees fan.

MLB postseason post strike through 2005 was a golden era. So many good narratives.

Stacked Braves win their only WS
Yankees dynasty
Bizarro Marlins WS 2x
Insane 2003 LCS in both leagues
2001 WS was an all timer
Red Sox curse ends with impossible comeback in 2003
White Sox curse ends

2002 was the worst year and still featured a 7 game World Series and the Angels winning was sort of a feel good story.

Definitely by the fans but ownership and Theo with his team of analytics genius nerds could not comprehend Grady “going with his gut”

I can appreciate any manager going with his gut and leaving a guy in. I miss the days of pitchers staying in games late. That said, EVERYBODY knew it was time to pull him, and Grady still left him in.

The thing is, Grady didn't even know how many pitches he'd thrown to that point, he admitted in in the documentary. By that point in his career Pedro would fall off a cliff when he got to a 100 pitches, and the bullpen had been on fire in the playoffs. No Red Sox fan would've blamed Grady if Timlin or Embree had blown it because they knew post 100 pitch Pedro was very average at that point.

It all worked out in the end, as bad as 2003 as for Red Sox fans, it made 2004 all that much better with the comeback against the Yankees and sweeping the Cards the next week in the World Series.

Boone hitting the home run was the one time I couldn’t move after a baseball game. I was just in shock and felt like the Sox would never win. The next year was even more magical because of it.

Pedro was on the juice as well. He was on the list of 104 players who tested positive for steroids in 2003.

Everyone would have reference game 6 in '86 removing Clemens and bring in Schiraldi to throw the final 3 innings

frick Pedro!

He's a world class bitch!
MF'er didn't bean batters his first couple of years (in the NL) but threw at them with impunity after joining the Red Sox.

I would still call his arse out if I ever see him!
