SIAP...Billionaire Miami booster John Ruiz recently announced that his family is funding and building a brand new stadium, either on campus or close to campus, that will be a fully retractable roof stadium with 50,000 seats. The new site seems to be at the current Coral Gables High School, which is just right down the road from the university. With Miami hiring Cristobal as head coach, it seems as though Miami is showing its commitment to getting the Hurricanes back to relevancy. Good for Miami...Finally!!
Edit: Ruiz is related to Cristobal through marriage. That is just so Miami....

I can’t believe it’s taken them this long and is only happening because a sugar daddy is bailing their incompetent asses out.

Coral Gables NIMBYs are tGOAT.

Good luck with that.
The high school that's targeted for the site is somewhat of a landmark and the City of Coral Gables is currently spending $25 million to upgrade it so I kind of doubt they are going to go along with tearing it down for a football stadium.
And they are probably going to run into some serious NIMBY resistance anywhere in Coral Gables. The odds of getting by the City Commission and residents is probably slim to none.
The University had a chance in the early 80s to build the on campus stadium that Schnellenberger commissioned plans for but that ship has long since sailed.

It's taken so long b/c Coral Gables NIMBYS are on another level of get off my lawn.
Never mind a new stadium, they had to fight tooth and nail to get new dorms built b/c of how difficult the locals make things.

I wouldn't want a football stadium in my backyard, either.
Go look at the site on Google Maps. You'd be just as NIMBY with this project.

They should look into buying the Ponce de Leon Middle School site. Couldn't be more perfect for a stadium

I'd love to have a P5 stadium a few blocks away, but maybe not one full of Miami fans

Design it correctly and you'll get an incredibly loud stadium just like Seattle.

Good, only 30K empty on Saturdays.

There are several reasons for that.
1. UM doesn't have space on it's campus to even attempt to squeeze a "boutique stadium" in like Tulane did. If the CGHS site becomes available that solves the problem since it is only like 2-3 blocks from UM's campus.
2. There was talk for years that UM and the Miami MLS team would partner on a stadium closer to UM's campus. However, David Beckham and Miami's MLS team have had hell trying to get a stadium built.
3. There are a lot of NIMBYs who will not be happy with having 50,000 UM fans interrupt their "Coral Gables intimate atmosphere" on Saturdays in the fall.

The source says that Ruiz is currently exploring other locations to build a new Coral Gables High School before starting on the stadium project.
The current Coral Gables High School location is on a 24.6 acre lot that is on the corner of Bird Road and Le Jeune Rd. It is less than two miles away from the University of Miami campus. A 50,000 seat stadium typically requires 13 acres of land.
The source says the Ruiz family already owns an acre lot across from Havana Harry’s restaurant, which is on Le Jeune Rd. in Coral Gables, and the vision for that lot is for it to be could be an eight-story garage for additional parking.
Sounds like Ruiz has f**k you money and he wants UM to stop being a laughing stock. He is proposing building a brand new CGHS before tearing down the old one.

That will be the tie up, but Ruiz probably knows what it will take to get the city commission go along with the plan. He probably knows some people who know some people who know some people to get the residents to shut up if he is that determined to get it built.

When the Hogs still brought SEC opponents to little rock and we were more average than flat out bad it was such a pain in the arse living close to the stadium. Cool if I was off terrible if I had to work or something else to do.

They could maybe do something where the HS is located. There is a nice mall next door (Merrick Park) so the hot latin moms can go shopping while dad is at the game. There is just a huge lack of space over there and a ton of old people who hate change.

I agree, 100%, it’s really smart to go small. The crowd atmosphere will be much better, and it will look better on TV.

50,000 is enough for Miami. Even when Miami was in their absolute prime (late 80s), there were some gams where they barely put any asses in the Orange Bowl. Don't forget it's a small, private university.

Miami didn't exceed 50,000 at Hard Rock this season.
