It comes as no surprise that the Heat taking on the Denver Nuggets, who are making their NBA Finals debut, would lead to some low TV ratings.

Game 1 of the 2023 NBA Finals drew a 2.21 rating in the key 18-49-year-old demographic. In total, the series opener averaged 7.62 million viewers according to preliminary overnight ratings, down from 11.4 million viewers for Game 1 of Boston against Golden State in the NBA Finals last year, which were the final numbers.

Across the board, the NBA has seen good TV ratings in these NBA playoffs. And it’s understandable that given market size and team history numbers would be down a bit for Miami against Denver when compared to the historic Celtics and dynasty building Warriors.

America sometime in the early 2000s(social media boom) are more driven by hate than like. Besides when their team plays, they tune in to hate someone, not cheer for someone

It’s why polarizing figures like Lebron and dray(warriors) etc drive ratings

People aren’t fans of the game, they’re fans/haters of the individual players now. Not surprising that a guy who is a wizard at the game isn’t attracting the viewers.

The LSU-Iowa women's basketball championship game drew more than that. A LOT more. Like 2 million more.

I would argue a byproduct of the COVID shutdowns. I know that it’s affected my fandom/viewing considerably, and I can’t explain it. It’s happened to different degrees with almost everyone I know.

Then they aren't true gans of the game, just individual players.

That’s the NBA’s fault. When you spend 90% of your marketing capital on one player, don’t be shocked that people only follow that player.

The 8th seed Miami Heat aren’t bringing many viewers.

They lucked out with the slew of injuries to Giannis, Randle, Tatum, Brogdon, and Jaylen Brown.

Any one of those guys are healthy for the whole series and they probably end up losing.

When you spend the last 20yrs dividing yourself from normal Americans this is what you get. Basketball used to be my 2nd favorite sport to watch, I haven't watched a game in over 10yrs.

Interesting that the 2020 was marginally worse when LeBron was in that one.

RE: this year I wonder if the numbers improve on the weekend games. Denver is an unknown to most fans because the NBA has failed to promote one of their best teams. If the numbers remain poor I wonder if they correct that by featuring their better teams more - at the very least when they are playing big name opponents

We're fans of centers who go hard in da paint. We like strong rim protectors. Jokic's half assed attempts at contesting shots at the rim are embarrassing for a man his size
