In the late 80’s and early 90’s the NBA added a ton of new teams prior to the European influx of players.

In 1988 the NBA added the Charlotte Hornets and the Miami Heat
In 1989 the NBA added the Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves
In 1995 the NBA added the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies

That is going from 23 teams to 29 in seven years. That would be like the NFL going from where it is now to 40 teams by 2027 without any increase in talent. Look at today’s NFL quarterbacks and imagine eight of the bench players at an being starters

The NBA has reached its highest levels in the 80’s (pre expansion) and now (post European player influx). The NBA May have expanded to fast and as a result allowed very inferior teams to exist from 1988 to 2000.

The heat magic and Hornets were all playoff teams by the mid 90s. Hell Jordan's bulls had to go through Orlando in 96 and Miami in 97 in the conference finals.

I'll say this about the '90s basketball. I can't think of an era where there were so few teams with 2+ star players. Who was the second best player on Patrick Ewing's Knicks teams? What about the second best player on Hakeem's Rockets? Reggie Miller's Pacers? Drexler's Blazers? All of those teams had one star offensive player and that was basically it.

I never mentioned James. I actually think Magic is the goat (he played against elite teams in the Celtics, Pistons, and Sixers and his career was cut short) followed by MJ and James tied, then Shaq, Kobe, Kareem, Bird, Russell, Duncan, Durant, and maybe Chamberlain

The warriors of the last three years would have swept most NBA finals team from 1990 to 2019 if healthy. Maybe the Shaq, Kobe Lakers put up a fight or Duncan, Ginobli, and Parker could pose problems but I can’t think of any other team that could score enough points to stay close. Not Lebron or MJ could do enough to slow down the Warriors.

1996 -1998 Bulls would struggle because Rodman and Green would just irritate each other and basically cancel each other out. That leaves MJ and Pippen vs. Curry, Thompson, and Durant. This would be a horrible matchup.

2000-2003 Lakers. Shaq would have dominated against the Warriors but it would come down to Kobe shutting down either Thompson or Durant for the Lakers to win. The team with Rice may have beaten the Warriors but after that I think the Warriors would win. This is coming from a Lakers fan.

Some of the mid 2000’s Spurs could have posed problems as Duncan would destroy Green and Ginobli and Parker would at least pose problems for Curry and Thompson defensively. Also Popavich is a better coach than Kerr which is something Kerr has never faced in the conference finals in or finals.

He's not wrong.

In 95-96, the Grizzlies were led by Greg Anthony and Blue Edwards. People remember the good teams, but the talent pool was diluted and there were some really weak teams.

Edit: and this shouldn't be a MJ/LeBron topic.

Check out some of those Celtics teams in the 60s. Don’t think Russell won any championship with less than 4 other HoFers on the roster. Believe there was one season they had 7 HoFers on the team.

In 95-96, the Clips were led by Loy Vaught, Bison Dele and Terry Dehere.

The league was definitely more diluted than mid-80's.

The NBA was already bringing in a lot of talent from Europe in the 80's. It was watered down but not nearly as much as you think.

Winning a bunch of titles is a demonstrable advantage to HoF election.
Lombardi's Packers
Noll's Steelers
Stengel's Yankees
Auerbach's Celtics
