"If the clock is stopped in the final minute of either half for a replay review, but would not have stopped without the review, officials will run off 10 seconds before resuming play. Either team could take a timeout to void the 10-second runoff."

That is an awful, awful rule.

That and other rules changes here:

No, it isn't. Re-read the bolded part:

quote:

"If the clock is stopped in the final minute of either half for a replay review, but would not have stopped without the review, officials will run off 10 seconds before resuming play. Either team could take a timeout to void the 10-second runoff."

It is awful. The team didn't ask for the review. The officials forced them into it, then run-off 10 seconds.

Which is about as much time elapses between plays if the clock isn't stopped by the review.

It's a non-issue.

I don't agree. Teams at least have the option to try and get it done under 10 seconds, and very often do. Now, they have no shot.

Its not that big a deal, I just hate the rule.

The one about giving a player time to recover a muffed punt is even worse though.

"If a punt returner makes a fair catch signal and muffs the ball, he is entitled to "reasonable opportunity" to catch the muff before it hits the ground without interference of the coverage team. The ball will be rewarded at the spot of the interference, but there will be no penalty yardage marked off."

A fair catch sacrifices the opportunity to advance the ball in exchange for protection. Giving him a reasonable opportunity to complete the play is fair.

everyone is talking about the OT rule change.. but there's a lot worse things going on in football changes this offseason.. including the defenses won't be able to launch any part of their body or something.. this sucis all going to affect the games more so than some ot penalty.

The key rules change for player safety bars a defenseless player from being hit in the head or neck area by an opponent who launches himself and uses his helmet, shoulder or forearm to make contact.

What's wrong with that?

maybe they will review the clock and run of 10 seconds from when the player was down?

this is less awful, but what if the offensive team in hurry-up wasted a lot of time - say 25 seconds - before almost snapping the ball. Now we're gonna reward them with an extra 15 seconds

this rule sucks no matter how you dice it

I would assume that if the team made no effort to snap the ball (i.e. ran off 25 seconds following the player being down until the review was called), it would remain at that point and time.

If the team made a concerted effort to get the ball downed or snapped by 10 seconds, it would go that way. This is just a way to not give teams an advantage because some replay official decides to review a play, thus giving them basically a free timeout.
