I was only halfway watching the game last night but was totally confused by the new onside kick rule.

If the owners are so worried about injuries for onside kicks. Do away with it all together.

Give the trailing team an option of 4th and 20 from the 20- yard line. Thoughts?

that would be stupid, all you have to do is throw up a pass and get bailed out on an interference call on 4th and 20
I don't need the refs controlling the game anymore then they do
that does nothing to reward the team that is leading the game at the time

The onside kick rule hasn’t changed except you can’t do a “surprise” one

I get it, not wanting to give refs more opportunities to control the game, but I think 4th and 20 would bring more excitement than an onside kick.

Rule will change when Mahomes and the Chiefs complain they didn't get a fair shake to steal a possession in a loss

They also stated the ball had to land in the “landing zone” for the onside kick. The team kicking used the punter to sky kick. The receiving team didn’t fair catch the ball because the ball landed past the “landing zone”. Totally confused me.

Well first of all, that wasn’t an onside kick. That was a free kick after a safety.

You are totally confused.

Onside kicks are the same

It's easy to fix this. No automatic first downs on 2 point trys.

Treat it like goal line yardage penalties. 5/10 yard penalties and half the distance to the line to gain.

I always thought the 4th and 20 instead of the onside kick could work but I thought about what you said. Refs would ruin it with Pass interference calls.

I initially thought I was but I googled it.

quote:

The Dolphins gave up a safety when they got the ball back when Huntley was called for intentional grounding while in the end zone. That made the score 24-12, and the Dolphins declared their intention for another onside kick. This one, again, was weird because punter Jake Bailey's onside punt landed beyond the setup zone, giving the Titans the ball at the Miami 10-yard line.

NFL used to be simple and pretty much anyone could understand it because it made sense. now the game is largely controlled by penalties and the rules are ridiculous and stupid.

The new onside kick rule is horseshite and is easily the worst change or decision that Goodell has presided over.

The rule should be one onside kick per team per game and we should go back to the wild west rules, keeping the adaptation that any penalty by the kicking team results in an unsuccessful attempt

On a free kick after a safety, the players would have been downfield like any other standard kick.

They were only 10 yards downfield because the Dolphins did declare an onside kick. There’s some new landing zone thing that I’m yet to understand why it exists.

Not true at all. The league has absolutely ruined the onside kick to the point where it's true success rate will be somewhere around 2% (the Cowboys recovered one 2 weeks ago which has spiked the success rate. I bet there won't be another successful one the rest of the season).

In the good old days it was closer to 20%

Yes it was.

That part is correct but per the new rules, the Dolphins had to declare that they would be attempting an onside kick which they did. The officials announced this as well on the broadcast prior to the attempt.

The fun thing is that it will never, ever result in being successful. Literally ever. So at least there's that.

So make it so it's a 10-yard penalty and repeat the down instead of the usual spot foul.
