New language about wideouts getting set in an effort to stop them from “cheating” the motion.

Honestly, I think I understand what they’re trying to prevent, but what kind of language is this?

quote:

The 2024 version of the NFL rulebook contains an item that wasn't there in 2023. Here's what the new rule says, "If an eligible receiver who is on the line of scrimmage moves backward or changes his stance (two point to three point or conversely) and does not come to a complete stop before the snap, it is a false start. Any eligible backfield player who changes his stance does not have to come to a complete stop prior to the snap, as long as his actions are not abrupt (false start) or forward (illegal motion)."

The words in bold were added for the 2024 season. According to Pro Football Talk, the NFL explicitly added the new rule to cut down on what the Dolphins were doing.

That’s not the restrictive part, the part before you bolded where it talks about changing stances is what will cut down on the sideways motion.

I read it as the non-bolded portion was already there… and the article is about what was added

I don’t think so. The bolded part was added to keep those receivers from “sprinting” into motion, which has come around the last few years.

It’s going to have to be more subtle like it used to be where receivers jog into motion rather than turning and immediately sprinting.

ETA: The dolphins were the main ones doing it, especially Tyreek. He’d get set and then jerk and start sprinting sideways before the snap to get a running start. I’m guessing that’s going to be a false start now.
