NHL All Time Goals Record Watch - Caps/Islanders 1130CT tooday. He stands alone 895 goals!

I know the hockey following contingency on this board is smaller but I think there is some momentum for hockey in the south. The game continues to grow and it is so fun to watch on tv and in person.
Hockey also thankfully has not yet been inundated with a high volume of commercials breaking up play like most other sports have.
Alex Ovechkin is sitting at 891 goals in his career, just 2 shy of Wayne Gretzky’s 893. After scoring in his last several games in a row, Ovi is now a hat trick away from breaking the record. The commissioner of the NHL as well as Wayne Gretzky and other NHL dignitaries are expected to attend every Capitals game until the record is broken.
The Capitals have 7 games remaining and at ovechkins current pace, the record will fall this season. He’s currently sitting at 39 goals which is amazing considering he is 39 years old. For reference, in his final season, Gretzky only scored 9 goals when he was 38. If ovechkin can break the record in the next 2 games, he will have surpassed Gretzky in the same number of games.
I’ve been a Capitals fan all of my life and I remember vividly when ovechkin was drafted when I was 10. Hockey exploded in the DC area and has never looked back. I remember some truly awful times and ovechkin brought us out of the dark ages of Capitals hockey as a middling expansion team with some flashes of success to one of the winningest franchises during his time here in terms of games and playoff appearances. While playoff success has been at times disappointing, he did deliver us the Capitals only Stanley Cup championship in 2018. On a more fun note, Ovechkin is something of a character, famously drinking coke on the bench instead of water and eating a Chicken Parmesan meal before every game from DCs Mamma Lucia’s. In today’s age of hyper nutritional athletes, I find this both hilarious and amazing.
I didn’t notice a thread on this board for this but figured since we are now within striking distance, the hockey following contingency on this board can follow and discuss here.
Go caps! And all hail The Russian Machine.

Ovechkin is also 3rd all time in hits - might not get the record for that and the stat hasn't been tracked for that long...
But all time goal leader and top 3 in hits? Guy is a freak.

Ovi is a machine.
As a Thrashers fan, I hated playing against him, even when Glen Hanlon was coaching at the Caps were trash. But when they went to the red/white/blue unis, the Caps took off, and have been a model franchise ever since - largely under Ovi's sheer force if will.
Incredibly happy to see him play, and to have him be embraced for the personality that he is. He's a fantastic ambassador for the sport, and has the potential to be a Barkley-esque analyst when he's done.
All hail the Great 8.

He's one of those players that it's hard to not like him. I've always felt he's must-watch hockey any time, looks like he's having fun out there. I've been paying more attention once he got inside ten goals to the record.

His production at his age with his diet regimen is absolute insanity. It’s just some piece of that communist era Russian machine in him. He’ll likely get 40 goals again at 39.
He’s also won more goal scoring titles than anyone else. Gretzky had higher highs, I think he had 91 or 92 goals in a single season, but Ovechkin has been a consistent scorer his entire career. Ovechkins high watermark is only 65 in 2008. He really hasn’t come close to that in any other year. Just shows his consistency that he never had a season head and shoulders above everyone else goal wise like Gretzky had but all time he’s right there with The Great One.

Was a 2nd thread for this needed?

Him and Crosby essentially saved hockey as it was coming out of the dead puck era.

Have a feeling it’s happening tonight
needs to happen so the team can get back to playing team hockey. They’ve hit a rut the last couple of weeks seemingly in the chase and doing everything they can to help 8 get it. Leno has looked awesome in his first two games so far with some typical rookie mistakes but he’s a mini Tom Wilson.
And put some respect on one of the best young players in the game, Protas
This has also been the unofficial theme song of the season

It's surprising he's only won the Cup once.

Can blame fat Ted for keeping McPhee around a little too long. They had a big window there for a little while. But also the Penguins were their Yankees (Caps were the Red Sox) and they kept running into them in the playoffs.
The loss to the Habs back in 2010 still stings.

I’m so glad we beat them in our cup year. And Ted is a good owner in terms of elevating the play, but he absolutely greases his affluent fan base. There’s nothing cheap about the caps anymore as a fan unfortunately. They really frick you in concessions and premium prices.

That's not entirely true. The ads have gotten out of control just like other sports. All the annoying fake ads on the glass, boards, and ice look ridiculous.

I agree I do hate Jersey and helmet ads. But at least the flow of the game is less interrupted.
