NIL has made things pretty crazy for NCAA football, but there are…

…real benefits in other sports, particularly baseball! LSU and other major baseball schools (in the SEC in particular) have been able to sign a lot more top MLB draft picks because of this influx of money. Top 10 draft picks are no longer automatically entering the draft. They see a lucrative future in staying in college baseball. Additionally, it gives them a chance to heighten their skills and make their ability to be a sure fire player that will make it to the show by running up against SEC batters/pitchers. This is particularly true for the second and third round high school draft picks. A kid that comes from a family with little means may have been enticed by a signing bonus as a third round pick to go pro…but now they can come to LSU, get paid, and improve their draft stock while getting an education should things go south.
Will we see more of the same in basketball? Are they going to be fewer one and dones? Of course the Cooper Flagg’s will still be one & done…but what about the Naz Reid’s??

Thanks for the insight man! I don’t think anyone on this board has ever thought about it in that way

baseball has changed more due to the MLB draft structure vs NIL. But I am sure NIL helps a little.

California college baseball was already on the way to dying, but NIL has definitely sped up the process as well.

From a development standpoint, you can definitely see the appeal of living a more stable life in a college town, with access to weight room, facilities, nutritionists, etc. over constant grind and life on the road in minor leagues. The former seems fun, while the latter seems like pure grind. If money is remotely even, easy choice.

chasing skirts at an SEC town for 3/4 years, getting a degree and making a little bit of NIL money seems much better than playing for the Midland rockhands

Riding those minor league busses, living in a motel, or with a host family.

I’m with you till this part. You will see no statistical difference in the top 10 going to college vs pro before NIL. That’s nonsense.

That’s because making it through the minors is no guarantee… in NFL and NBA you’re playing right after being drafted with big money from day 1. Baseball you’re toiling on the buses and may not make the majors for years. You really have to be a star to get to the big money

The money and living conditions have to be 100x better in college than minor league baseball right?
