‘One of a Kind’ , a MLB Network documentary on Greg Maddux airs tonight at 7

He was a virtuoso of the mound. I have never seen anyone past or present who could control location and subtle changes in speed like Maddux.

Excited for this one - thank you for posting.

His personality is not something I expected to be as fun and engaging as it’s turned out to be. He’s hysterical. I guess since he pitched before social media and when I was a little kid I never got to see it.

Although I will again tell my personal Greg Maddux story

Every summer growing up, as the braves would play in St. Louis .. my parents and I would go. We would stay at the Adams mark hotel . That’s where the braves would stay

I was a huge braves fan and some of the players were so nice . Chipper jones talked to my dad for awhile in an elevator

So one day we were going to the elevator to go downstairs to get autographs like everyone else was doing.

My dad and I are on this random floor. Waiting for the elevator .its just us. Greg Maddux walks up. I’m 9 years old and starstruck. I’ve got baseballs on me and pens.

I ask “ Mr Maddux.. can I get your autograph??” And Greg Maddux as sure as I type this goes “ sorry kid.. I quit doing autographs a half hour ago.”

And it crushed me. And my dad he saw how badly it crushed my spirit .. I thought he was going to assault Greg Maddux at the elevator. Called him names I’ve never heard him say before or since 20 something years later

We did not get on that elevator with him as I’m not sure Greg would’ve made it out alive .

And to this day I still hate Greg Maddux .
