One of the great brawls in sports history was waged 40 years ago today...

August 12, 1984. The San Diego Padres were playing the Atlanta Braves at the old Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta when a wild pitch set off a series of events that eventually saw fans on the field brawling with players.

Back when this country had balls.

I looked as much as I could and failed to find a punch thrown...was it all just pushing and tackling?

The Braves TBS days were the best. This is the only brawl I’ve ever seen where both the pitcher & the hitter left the action completely after the brawl started

John McSherry was one fat phuck.

Call time out when pitcher is in motion and you deserve a pitch at your shoulder. Hardly worth going crazy over.

They had at least 3 bench clearings during this game. Watched it from hotel room in Ft Walton Beach while we were on vacation. I can remember it like it was yesterday.

Yeah, for that reason I’d still put the Miami U/FIU brawl or the Malice at the Palace over this one.

rules of baseball brawling are so strange.
run there to be there.
proceed to not do shite.
then grab a hold of another color jersey.
pretend ya'll are rough housing holding each other from going to punch someone else.
run to new pile, rinse and repeat.

There was a lot more to it than that. He was moving out the way b/c he knew the ball was coming at him.
The guy getting thrown at was the opposing pitcher, Perez. He hit the first batter of the game, and he hit one of their players in the previous game they played b/c a batter kept trying to bunt.
They threw at Perez in all 4 of his at bats that day.

John McSherry was a good umpire and by almost all accounts, a good man. Tragic what happened to him.
Those multiple brawls occurred because the Padres pitchers had terrible aim at Pascual Perez, may he also RIP. They tried multiple times to hit Perez and kept missing him.

I remember watching this game at my grandfather's
That was the 8th inning fight, they would fight again in the 9th. 17 total ejections and a handful of arrest. The umps cleared both dugouts for the remainder of the game.
The OP video was 4th straight at bat that Padres pitchers threw at Perez. It only took four pitchers and 15 pitches, before they hit him.
Perez had hit the leadoff batter in the back with a fast ball with the first pitch of the game, for bunting twice with the lead the night before.
