Teams absolutely would fumble the ball forward on purpose. That's why this rule exists.
The rule doesn’t exist and they don’t do it.
The Holy Roller was not a purposeful fumble, it was a purposeful non recovery and should’ve already been illegal due to the intentional batting of the ball down the field. The NFL overreacted to one play 50 years ago

What if the linebacker touched the ball, bobbled the recovery and then Georgia recovered?
Go back to the spot of the fumble. Rule should just be that the offense can’t advance the ball on a fumble unless the ball carrier recovers his own fumble.

Should the defense be incentivized to not recover fumbles in certain situations
Well it would have been to their advantage to recover it so UGA wouldnt have had it 3rd and 1/2 yard

but why?
Why shouldnt the ball just be down where it’s downed on the field?
If there’s botched snap I’d like to see the offense be able to pick it up and run with it and make a play out of it. Let the play continue until the ball is downed

How many times have we see a botched punt return turn into a great play for the return team. To me it’s just stupid to say that because on very rare occasions an offensive mistake will work out for the offense we should change the whole dynamic of football.

It’s exactly like saying you shouldn’t get a reception if the unintended receiver catches it off a tip. Should the offense be rewarded for dropping a pass? You can take this logic to a million different places and change the game. Or just accept that every once in a while shite happens

Pretty sure the NFL has that rule in the last two minutes of either half and anytime on 4th down.

only the player who fumbled the ball could recover it or advance it.

All because of the Raiders....

Ken Stabler fumbles forward, Casper the Ghost recovers in the end zone for a game winning TD.

It's not a stupid rule.

It's a rule at the high school level, also.
